Yeah I just posted the rules above. There's nothing about him refusing a contract or not. If he doesn't sign, we get #63. It's # selected in previous draft but in the 2nd round. He was selected #31.. so with 32 teams, we get #63 I guess?

That said, we have 2 years to sign him.. so one more year after this one?

You need to have submitted a Bona Fide offer.

And yes, we have until June 1st 2023.

I know that the Rangers got a pick because they couldn't sign Cherepanov after he passed away. I thought I heard at the time that it was because he refused a contract as a formality while playing in Russia. I could be wrong.

Looking at previous drafts:

+1 2nd pick in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, etc.

Seems like it happens a lot

I'm not sold on the kid either. Make him show something next year if he wants to be an NHLer. A 2nd could be more valuable than him if he can't piece together a good D+2 season.

Minny is about to get a compensatory 2nd round pick for not signing their 1st round pick from 2018 (whose rights expire tomorrow)

the only reason you are not sold is because you are too concerned with ethical and moral dilemmas.
That and he's only played 30 games in two years, 20 of which were in the Swedish Z league, which can have disastrous results on development. On top of that he injured himself in a dumb fight and may have given himself permanent shoulder issues.

Of course the possibility they sign him is real.

But this isn't the previous group that drafted Mailloux. This is a brand new group of people in charge now and they could value an extra 2nd round pick in their pocket for 2023 that would fall on their laps. A 2nd round pick they can use to move up in the 1st round and get a better player.

You can't move up much in the 1st round using the 63rd pick. That would've been a 3rd round pick just 2 years ago.

I’d be happy with the late 2nd for him. Unless he plays and tears the OHL apart. The lack of hockey is a concern.

Really? Kid played 12 freakin games this year. You were sold with those games?

He's a former mid to late round ranking prior to his mistake and in his 12 games, he has good numbers. Who knows where he ends up but giving up on him this early is premature. He's got a very good set of tools

Wait and see what this kid does with the Knights this year. I am willing to bet his on ice product in his D+2 season is as good or better than Guhle's.

I'm not saying to drop him now. I'm clearly saying though that he does not deserve a contract. Yet.

If Mailloux does very well in the next junior season, like i think he will, they will sign him, they have plenty of time left.
He's the rare prospect that they can take all the time they want to bring him up and develop. No one is calling for him to go to Laval, called up etc. Let him develop in the shadows and emerge when he's ready to dominate. No hurry at all...
