Cooley had the better start to the season two years in a row. However, Slaf was far better than Cooley in the 2nd half of last season. We'll see what happens this time.

Cooley is a centre playing at close to a ppg while being a play driver. He’s the key player on any line he’s on. Slafkosky is a winger who looks like he’s going to be a nice complimentary piece on a line with play drivers.

This is, for me, one of those drafts that is totally team dependent on the selection. Always nice to see more than one elite player doing well for their respective teams.

You sure about that? Last season Cooley had 3 goals at around the halfway point. His start to the season last year wasn’t the greatest.

I like Slaf a lot, but at this point, what are people seeing that makes them think that he still has a higher upside than Cooley?

Cooley's an elite skating center, with a good shot, and high level hockey sense that plays all situations- and is a shade off PPG at 20. Cooley's ceiling is unbelievably high. I'd argue it's higher than Slafkovsky's.

Nothing against Slav but Cooley looks a lot better to me. Slavs going to be good too so habs fans can still be happy. New Jersey fans should probably be upset but they probably don’t care because their team is stacked with young talent.

Slafkovský, he's a unicorn. Cooley may very well end up being the better player, but at this point I'll still take the upside.
What unicorn exactly ?

6 goals in 43 games on a 47 point and 11 goal pace for a 1st overall forward in his 3rd season

This is almost Nail Yakupov territory

Yakupov finished his 3rd season with 14 goals

He legitimately looks like the worst 1st overall pick since Nail Yakupov

His draft position, that's literally it.

Cooley is the easy answer right now.

Cooley in a vacum is probably the best player, but in Montreal I still take Slafkovsky. Might be bias, but he seems to be the powerforward this team has been lacking since forever and there's still a lot of room to grow in his case.
I don't ever see him as a powerforward. I see him as a big forward.

Eric Lindros size with plenty of skill and mobility. Guys like that don't peak at 20.

Even though you are clearly a hater, you know enough to know that guys that big and play that style don't fully grow into it until their mid 20s. Cooley is clearly ahead now but 5 years from now no one can know...

Clearly a hater because I think Cooley was and still is the far superior player ? Or because I said he is the worst #1 pick since Yakupov ? Because he clearly is and it's not particularly close. I dislike the Habs but i'll give credit where it's due, I'm a huge fan of Hutson's game. Even though people were roasting him for the minus 5 the other night, it happens, the guys a future superstar. I literally don't see any flashes of that brilliance from Slaf. He just looks like a regular roster guy when I see him. I think fans are just attached to the draft capital invested in him and try and make themselves believe he's better than what he's showing.

He'll be a fine NHLer and obviously will get better from here, but he's not looking good for a #1 pick. As for this comparison it's Cooley easily.

Also 4 goals is dreadful for a 1st overall forward in his 3rd year, has absolutely nothing to do with him not growing into his frame yet. We've seen rookies score 30-40 goals
