Habs fan here, wanted to draft Cooley and Michkov. But Slaf is very good and I'm sure we'll be happy to have him when we eventually go back into the playoffs
I think you'd have to make a trade for size if you had a core of Hutson Suzuki Cooley Michkov . Don't even care about Michkov now that we have Laine.

He originally said he was staying on the Gophers one more year. He would have been the shoo-in for the Hobey.

20 years old Logan Cooley is having an amazing season, his stat line right now is:

45 games, 14 goals, 27 assists, 41 points
On pace for: 26 goals, 49 assists, 75 points

This guy is progressing so quickly, last season he had 44 points. He will be a 1C soon.
Only surprise here is that he's doing it so early in his career as he's not the biggest player.

Had him as the best player on my draft board that year.

Always said it . . .

Congrats Utah fans. He looks great.

Still happy the Habs picked Slaf, when he's on he's a force of nature, and we already have a smallish center (Suzuki).

Everyone leaves happy (except Devils and Kraken fans )

What is really surprising to me is how the offence picked up considering he has turned into a defense first player..

Last year he was stifled offensively because the coach wanted him to work defense… this was not something he was used to and took him until January before he started producing offensively..

Thi# year he has been the most complete player, in my opinion..maybe with Sergachev as the exception

Habs fan here. Logan Cooley definitely is ahead of Juraj Slafkovsky as of right now. Cooley is a tremendous player, really like his play and also the way he conducts himself off the ice. Kid is humble and let his hockey do the talking. Amazing player for the Yotes and the league.

I believe you meant to say "Amazing player for the Hockey Clubs and the league."

Very surprised to see this. I confess my exposure to him this season is very limited (Only three full games, none of them live) but my take away each game was that he was completely lost defensively and in one of the games in particular that he he was making really poor decisions without the puck and repeatedly lost his man in his own zone.

Cooley is great and he was developed smartly. The paradox is that, when you don't rush players and let them take the smart path, they actually blossom sooner.and achieve greater potential. That's a lesson for the Habs brass (and a whole lot of posters on the Habs board who are only beginning to realize what happened).

I believe he is the #1 C in Utah, good line with Keller and Schmaltz. He and Keller will definitely be on the radar for next year's U.S Olympic team.

Disastrous is pushing it.

It was an interesting gamble. He's got a lot of tools, he's talented, seems to have a great attitude. Unfortunately, they rushed him to the NHL when he should have polished his offensive skills against competition he could handle.

Mishandling a high pick like a bunch of amateurs is obviously a setback. He'll still be a good player and I expect improvements but the subpar development will leave some marks.

Some of us knew better but were yelled at and worse for arguing our piece.

Regardless, this is about Cooley and Cooley's putting up serious numbers. He's already lapped the 1OA of his draft in career points and it seems just the beginning. Cooley's floor might've been lower than Slaf's but his ceiling was undoubtedly higher. Him and Keller bring a lot of excitement every night. Lucky for him and his franchise that he's developed so quickly... unlucky for them that Slaf was given a massive contract because Cooley's gonna ask for more!

These accomplishments used to be slightly more impressive when the NHL scoring leader wasn’t 2 points away from 75 in January.

A fine player nonetheless. :)
A 20 year old sophomore a few points off pace a PPG season is really impressive. Imagine if the Habs had a player like that?

Should have went first overall. He's already scored more goals this year than Slafkovsky is on pace to score in 82 games.

Slafkovsky secured that 7.6M x 8 contract extension though.
As a Habs fan

I was bitter we didn't take him

Still am...

I also wanted Cooley but Slaf is also good. He may be not as productive as Cooley but he provided another dimension to our offense.

Not really

Tons of us wanted Cooley
Cooley was indeed seen as the dynamic skilled player in the draft on our board, but on the small size. I still like the Slaf pick though, some nights I see what he can become, and that would be terrific. Then some nights he is on the wrong side of ordinary and meh. But he is only 20, it is to be expected.

Cooley's having a terrific season, however he's a very different style of player than Slafkovsky. Anyone who thinks the verdict is in now that both players are 20 should review NHL history. It'll take another three/four years before we have an informed opinion on which player's career is better.
