Logan Cooley is on pace for 75 points

Slaf was a solid pick, and I don't think the Habs should regret taking him at all. He's gonna be a great player for a long time.

But to say Cooley would have been redundant is a bit silly. Every team in the league could use a player like that.

The sample size of thousands of players across thousands of games over the last 15+ seasons suggests that a 13% on ice shooting percentage is not sustainable at 5v5.
The Habs director of scouting recently said that they didn’t draft Michkov because the last 3 Stanley Cup winners were already much bigger than the Habs. Cooley was the same size as Michkov on their draft days.

Could we have drafted Cooley which is redundant (see Suzuki among other) instead of Slaf? Have him transit in the Habs organization then to trade him for a player like Slaf which we absolutely need? Could we get Slaf and a pick or Slaf and a prospect, instead of just Slaf? Depending on the day, perhaps. IDK

Also redundant is not a slight on Cooley. I’m sure Utah fans love Cooley. But if we would be Columbus with those giant Russians perhaps Slaf would be redundant.

I think you have to take best player available. Hard to say the Habs would be worse off with Michkov, Cooley, and Demidov. Sure, they'd be smaller, but that's a **** ton of talent.

Michkov- Suzuki - Caufield
Demidov - Cooley - Laine
Heineman - Evans - Anderson

That's a pretty sick top 9 with some decent size.

That said, I don't think they Habs necessary flubbed on the Slaf pick. He's gonna be a great player for them. Hughes probably takes a do over, but its not some egregious mistake.

Passing on MIchkov though will probably hurt for a while.

This is certainly a take

On the Habs board, you have people that think Cooley and Michkov were BPA, others one and not the other, others neither. Then you have those that it still matters and others it doesn’t matter anymore as we have Demidov, Laine and Hutson and we’ll need to fit all those people under the cap.

I was camp Michkov from day 1 and still believe he is the BPA, but it doesn’t matter because of the moves we’ve done since then and being in a salary cap NHL. I was never in camp Cooley and theoretically I’m still not even convinced he’s BPA, but I know we don’t need this player no matter how much people want to force him on us.

As a Utah fan living in Montreal's land, I will say this. Im ecstatic on the Cooley pick I think we got the best piece for our rebuild that we could have gotten in that draft for our rebuild. A far as I can remember Yotes/Utah didn't have a good #1 center for more than two decades. Meanwhile, I think Slaf will be a solid pick long term for them and the Hutson pick was the steal of the draft. Both teams are happy with how that draft went.

I know that Cooley will be a terrific center but I think the Habs made a good pick in Slaf because it gives the Habs a good balance of speed, skill, size, and toughness on their 1st line. The last few games, Slaf played very good like in the 2nd half of last season. He was a contributor of the Habs success recently. Overall, I am happy with Slaf.
