Yes there is though because those were based on 82 game seasons which this year isn't what's happening, so instead of playing 82 games of good hockey (which the Leafs haven't yet demonstrated they can do) a team need only play 50. The leafs have demonstrated they can play 50. Don't be silly and ignore the stats that prove you wrong.

But in 2011 they played a very poor first 50 games and played a good last 32 games.

So you are basically just stat mining to fit your agenda.

The Leafs record over the past 8 years is what it is.

Most recently this has resulted in them being 5th last, 9th last, and 2nd last and each time out of the playoffs.

It's absurd to think that this record makes them better than the team's that were ahead of them in the standings.

It's just common sense.

And that's what I want from a season like this...where the Leafs team sucks...and they own their own first round pick.

Seems like a good time to get a number one center or defenceman.

Right, but it's a lot more difficult to finish last than you're it is. You have to give up Kessel, Lupul, Phaneuf, and perhaps Liles. Is it really worth it to lose 3 current or former all-stars who are under the age of 30 and then hope that the young players don't overachieve, to get one stud one prospect?

That's presumptuous.

We finished 2nd last with Kessel on the team (which gave Boston superstar Tyler Seguin)

Again, I'm not ssaying it's likely for the Leafs to make the playoffs, I'm merely saying it's possible. Besides, the team in 2011 didn't have a top 10 scorer in Kessel, and a PPG player in Lupul.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's not likely.

Well with all of the "all-stars" we just finished 5th last..

Nothing is out of the realm of possibility with this team and with the new rules in place...being 5th last has GREATER odds to land the 1st overall pick.

This is a reasonable goal to strive for.

Getting Nathan Mackinnon, or Seth Jones, or Jonathan Drouin.

It's also possible for me to win the lottery today.

Probably won't happen.

I'm going to budget what money I have to prepare like I am NOT going to win the lottery since it is likely not to happen.

The Leafs should prepare their team to NOT make the playoffs.

Which means try and get the best prospect in the draft they can.

Is Gardiner still out with a concussion? I noticed he wasn't in the lineup last night. Sucks a lot for the Leafs if he is out long term.

This is a worry from the perspective Carlyle will rush Rielly into a losing line up. Burke said it's up to him, a change from he would prefer junior players get some AHL seasoning. Lord knows we have seen enough Schenn's to not learn our lesson now.

I truly hope Leafs do the right thing here and let Rielly finish up where he started at Moose Jaw, clearly Morgan's thoughts are still with the team if you scan his tweets when he was oversees. Let nature run its course, the current team is awful, the AHL team is promising, lose out this year, grab another high pick, new CBA, get a Goalie next year, start promoting players from the AHL/CJHL for the 13-14 season when things look a lot brighter.

Enough with the half a$$ed squeaking into the playoffs, damned our prospect quick fixes. Target Jones, Mackinnon or Drouin. Add them to Rielly and we will see how bright our future is then, and if you cannot see how much brighter the Leafs future is with 2 of these prospects in our line up in the near future, then you my Leafs fan comrade(not you Fenton specifically but Leafs fans in general), are in for a world of whirlpool hurt.

That's what I'm saying. I don't know how you "strive" towards it without gutting players. Hoping for the team to lose will help just as much as hoping for them to win, so a wait in see attitude is the only one to have. Trust me, I don't want the team to finish 9th, but I have no effect on that.

Excellent insight Interactif.

What does the new CBA mean for the leafs?

Now that the details are becoming clear, what aspects of the new CBA put the leafs in a favorable position, and which aspects put the leafs in an unfavorable position?

I've always felt that Burke was guarded in some of his moves with the uncertainty of a new cba looming. But now that it's here .....

At first glance i dont see a whole lot of advantage for the richer teams or for the leafs.

Cox tweeted this earlier:

Damien Cox (@DamoSpin) tweeted at 7:49am - 6 Jan 13:
For Leaf fans, payroll at $63.5m (approx) with only Franson to sign. Can go up to $70.2m. Lots of room for a G with a $5.33m cap hit.

Of course that hyperbole is silly. the Leafs making the playoffs isn't akin to winning the lottery as good goaltending (which is always highly variable) will likely get the leafs into the playoffs, and the leafs have proven they could have a winning record after 50 games.

Let them be as bad as they are in actuality.

When the games got tougher, they were very weak, other teams raised their games post All star break, can the Leafs do the same? The answer with this lineup is no, they were incapable of raising their games. I don't subscribe to the theory it was a lack of effort, more so it was a lack of talent and leadership.

Plus brutal goaltending.

Fine, but it's a young team and they tend to trend upwards in the talent and leadership department. Again, it's possible, not likely.

Yeah.. No. This team has more talent then some of the teams that made the playoffs last year.

Too bad Ryan Murray had to get hurt, I really saw us giving Columbus and Edmonton a run for 30th this year. Edmonton has a promising young line up, they aren't good yet, but they are on the verge of not hogging the 1st pick anymore. Columbus actually has some life post Nash trade. I am actually quite stoked with our current top 6 and woeful defence and goaltending we have a shot at Seth Jones. and I only have to root tank for 3 months!

Seth Jones chant.
