why not:
1. make the cap gap at 44-65 mil
2. allow the 44 mil and under clubs to offer up 7yr (or 8) deals
3. allow the 65 mil cappers only 5 yr (or 6) max offers

when a star player hits UFA:
NYR PHI etc. can offer 7 mil for 5 yrs = 35 mil. (or 6 yrs = 42mil)
MIN NAS etc. can offer 5 mil for 7 yrs = 35 mil. (or 8 yrs = 40mil)

salaries per season would be relative to team payrolls - not comparable to similar players on other teams.
MLB saw bautista and longoria offered considerably less per season with teams with (at the time) small market payrolls as an example - were as NYY or LA would have given 20-25 mil a yr to.

Contracts should be up to the players to decide.

If Columbus wants to pay their star max money for max term why should they be denied?

lets see...you could say:
under 44 mil teams can offer up to 7 ys
45-55 mil teams can offer up to 6 yrs
56 + mil teams can offer up to 5 yrs

The players will never allow that many jobs to be lost.

Well if the club fail and go Bankrupt, can't the league just shut it down?

No idea. I would think that the Players would strike if the League tried to axe 1/3rd of their jobs.

Another detail emerging: NHL has upped its compliance buyout offer to 2 per team, up from 1 prior to 2013-14 season.

does this mean we could buyout 2 players ? (connolly and lombardi)

re-read the tweet you posted, the compliance buyouts wont happen before the up coming shorten season if they have one. they will happen next summer, as the cap will be staying at 70 mill this season then dropping for 2013-2014 season. and at that point both Lombadri and Connolly will be off the books so the only notable guy we might buyout would be Komi.

I was reading somewhere that contraction, just like expansion doesn't need to be negotiated.

How could a Union stop a business from going out of business? Thats absolutely ridiculous. If the NHL contracts, the players cant do squat about it. I have lost my job 3 times in the last 5 years. Suck it up NHLPA....thats the modern economy. As for the fans....contraction is the best thing that can possibly happen, IMO...but like some have stated..not an easy sell...especially with Buttman at the helm.
