3 out of last 5, Vienna 2005 world championship was equal to World cup or Olympics (dont see why not, all top players from all teams were there due to lockout)

and for last 20 years its 3 of last 7

which can be equal when Czechs win at Sochi. :naughty:

this Czech team probably will have its handful with Latvia and I wouldn't be shocked if they lost to them

No team will dominate,

Reasons Canada wont win gold, Price, Luongo, Smith, Hamhuis, Carter, Nash, Kunitz , Marleau.

My pick is USA or Russia sadly

and do you think Czechs will count if the Russians win? or Finnish when sweden wins?

Its not Canada 2 rest of the world 2
its Canada 2 Czechs 1 Sweden 1, when czechs or sweden wins they will equal Canada

The Czech team is hilarious this year hahahahahhahahah

the Czech team had one good tournament because one great goalie stood on his head for that tournament. They have done nothing ever since, and I don't see them doing anything in the future, not especially with the roster they have put into the tournament. The worst goalie of the major countries and they need to rely upon guys 40+ year olds like nedved and jagr, no new blood in their system.

I love how people constantly throw out the theory that Canada only won in 2002 because Belarus beat Sweden. Like it's so outrageous to suggest that Canada wouldn't have been able to beat Sweden, a team after all, that couldn't beat Belarus in a do or die game.

As much as people hate us and try to pretend that Canada isn't the best hockey country on Earth I've got some news for you. We've won 2 of the 4 Olympics that have been best on best with the 2004 World Cup thrown in for good measure, not to mention 5 out of 7 best on best tournaments between 1972 and 1998. Not only can no other nation make even the slightest argument that they have been better than us in hockey, but further, all other hockey nations COMBINED have not had our level of success at hockey in the last forty years, and specifically in the last 16.

We are the best. We always have been. We are the defending Olympic Champions, and if somebody wants that title then come and get it. Good luck to you!

The gap has gotten closer, there is more parity than ever, we will not win every tournament, but that doesn't change the fact that Canada is so clearly the best hockey country on Earth. Quit pretending that we're not. It's OK! Everyone knows the truth.

Are you going to watch the tournament or just bask in the feeling of superiority?

There's a fair number of people (while still in the minority) saying that Canada will not even medal (see the who will win gold thread). That's a bold prediction to me, and would mean that they're in a lower tier than the "tier A" teams that medalled.
That's exactly what happened in 2 of the last 4, so it's really not a bold prediction at all.

get ready for all the excuses. You see, they won't come back with what they have won or why there record should speak for itself. No they will come back and try to denigrate Canada's record. Watch and see.

If we win the gold it's gonna be without a loss, cause I can't imagine we lose to Finland.

...which doesn't happen lately.

In the last 4 Olympics, no team has come out of the round robin portion of the tournament with a perfect record to go on and win gold.

'98: Czechs lost to the Russians
'02: Canada lost to Sweden, tied the Czechs
'06: Sweden lost to Russia and Slovakia
'10: Canada lost to the U.S. shootout win over the Swiss

Almost makes you hope Canada gets the loss out of the way early on against Finland.

I agree, if Canada doesn't win, it will be a massive disappointment as they are the prohibitive favorites. Anything short of gold is a choke job. Essentially, that's what it is.

no more like Canada is the favorites and if someone else wins, congrats to them, they will have earned it. But who are we kidding, we all know Canada is going to win Gold again

It's ok. It'll make it that much better when excuses are made in the end.

It's a tad arrogant to start celebrating before the tournament is played out.

Looks like some Canadians still haven't gotten over losing to the Czechs at the world juniors. The Czech roster doesn't appear to be strong but I didn't foresee Slovakia beating Sweden last Olympics so who knows what could happen.

forums would be kind of boring if every one was a robotic poster only posting the politically friendly thing to say. So, if you take it as arrogance, go right ahead. I take it as confidence. One will be right in its prediction, and the other will be incorrect, but life will go on

huge upsets happen all the time in hockey and in sports, otherwise what fun would they be to watch

for example see
1980 usa over soviet union, Olympics
1998 Belarus over Sweden, Olympics
2006 Russia over Canada, Olympics
2013 france over Russia, world championships

Canada did not really dominant last time despite the Gold Medal. They lost to the US pretty good in the group stage and the Swiss took them to Shootout. They only beat Slovakia by a goal and then the US took them to overtime. That was on home ice too. Their only really dominant performance was against Russia.

They outshot both the US & the Swiss in the group stage by a 2 to 1 margin.
