Their Defensive core is by far the strongest.

But they still are by no means a lock. Single elimination means just a few bad bounces can knock *any* team out.

On paper this team looks like it should dominate, or at the very least, control possession of the puck and have most of the quality chances in the game.

Speed is actually pretty good as well. Marleau, Duchene, Stamkos, Carter, Nash, Bergeron, Sharp. Deceptively good skaters in Toews, Crosby, Benn, Tavares. And the only players I would classify as slow are Getzlaf and Perry, but that didn't stop them from dominating Russia in 2010 and U.S. in the finals with those slick backhand passes. (My fondest memory of the tournament, besides the OT goal by Crosby, is the slick passing plays of Getzlaf and Perry).

But then look at 1998 and 2006. That offense was terrible... Zamuner (98) Draper, Smythe, Bertuzzi (06).

Bertuzzi still living off of pre-lockout success (Similar to Nash)
Smythe (skating was a disaster on big ice)
draper (like bringing a lesser version of Bergeron)

I remember the Tampa Bay trio being brought along for their chemistry but that failed big time. Bergeron was brought along in 2010 for past chemistry with Crosby but that failed (to be fair, he was coming off an injury and Babcock took him of Crosby's line half way through the 1st period). I can definitely see Getzlaf and Perry succeeding just as much as I can see them failing to establish effective chemistry in Sochi just like the Tampa Trio failed to do so (I panicked as soond n as Italy gave them a hard time in 2006 and knew right there that this team wasn't going to medal; I was expecting something like a 14-0 score).

The best team wins which is not always the team with the most talent. The US may not have the depth but they sure as hell have the talent. Russia, Sweden, Finland shouldnt be taking lightly either.
Man I wish Quick was on the Islanders. What fun he is to watch and my favorite goalie.
Quick could be a game changer. Upsets happen in all sports. Coaching, defense, desire can be big factors. I'm laughing at the person who is arrogant enough to suggest Canada will lose only if they beat themselves or the refs beat them.

It's one game, something is telling me the States aren't going to score 7 goals a game for the rest of the tournament. Wait until Canada faces a team that plays them talent for talent, rather than playing four men back 90% of the game. No one will remember the Norway game when it comes to the elimination round.

Also it might be my homerism, but I roll my eyes at the notion that Quick, Rask, Lundqvist and Varlamov, are significantly better than Carey Price. Seeing how Price has a higher save percentage and has more shutouts than all but one of them, while playing for the weakest team out of them to boot.

But in the same way you suggest Crosby Tavares and Getzlaf are so much better than say Kane Kessel and Kesler?
There's a reason these guys are all NHL all stars and top draft picks.
No Quick isn't significantly better. Suggesting that Canada will have a cakewalk to the finals is absurd.

:handclap:
What a cocky thread... Threads like this is the reason why all other hockey nations do not like canadian fans.

Don't forget to take light bulbs with you, winners!
:handclap:
So you can imagine the reaction in Canada when they lose?

The fans may not respect the opponents but Canadians players sure do.

By the game against Norway you wouldn'tthink so though.

Does Canada do anything else but make excuses? Oh yeah, it was not our best team...God, I keep hearing it all the times, that's gotta be in your DNA or something. Oh..we lost...well, its gotta be that we didn't have our best. I keep hearing that your B team would be playing A team in the final if that was allowed...and yet Canada keeps coming up with excuses. I swear to god a bunch whiners.

You think 1972 USSR team has their best players?? Ever heard of a scrub like Firsov?? You know the one which is arguably top 5 best forwards in Soviet hockey...just shut the hell up already and play the game.

Why yes of course I heard of Firsov my Russian friend . Wasn't he the guy who quit on the USSR and wouldn't report for the 72 Summit series because Tarasov didnt have full control of the USSR squad . He did have a heck of a career as a professional hockey player masquerading as an amateur , really cant fault him for that though I guess hey (sic) .

BIG difference is Orr and Hull and Sanderson and Cheevers and even Howe would never quit on there Country like Firsov did in 1972 . Too bad the poor guy wasn't even allowed to watch a darn Summit game , let alone play you say . BTW .. Firsov couldn't hold Kharlamovs jock strap in 72 and USSR still lost

Canada doesn't need to make excuses, it just wins, like 2 of the last 3 gold medals. Does Russia ever win anything?

Will: if Kunitz and Carter are as ordinary against Austria tomorrow as they were today and Yzerman and Babcock move Duchene and Tavares onto the top unit in time.

Will not: if Kunitz and Carter are as ordinary against Austria tomorrow as they were today and Yzerman and Babcock do not move Duchene and Tavares onto the top unit in time.

;)

I won't be surprised if they don't medal. I know it's only the first game, but they didn't look good, just a patchwork team.

The rest of the world has gotten too good for team canada gm's to just lazily pick the guys highest on the nhl stats charts

The game against Norway doesn't really mean much at all.

If Canada wins 8-0: "They are playing against non NHL defenseman, they won't score this much against a real defense"

Canada wins 3-1: "OMG! How will they score against the better teams in the league if they can only score 3 goals against Norway"

Canada can't really win in this "If" game...just win the Gold, that's all that matters.

People calling us arrogant, I think we have the right as we have won the past two out of three Olympics.

Won't dominate because they are overly cocky and think this is a lock and in the bag. Watching the Canadian highlights I would of expected more after the first period strong showing. I'm just being honest

You only saw the highlights. They started very slowly in the first. Anyways the talk of dominating is over because Canada didn't win 16-0 over Norway :biglaugh:

Bad luck, intangibles, poor game plans, weak chemistry, meltdown in net at the worst time.

Canadian fans have nothing to do with it. Anything could happen in a short tournament like this.

Norway got 1 shot in the 2nd period and it came at the 18:30 mark. The 2nd period was as dominant as it gets, Norway played a good game but I felt that score was extremely flattering for them.
