This is funny. All uber talented high performance elite athletes are uber confident and yes even cocky. What did Ovechkin say to a Russian reporter today? Team Russia's main opponent will be ourselves. (Sounds a little cocky to me.)

I think that is the Russian culture talking.

We Canadians, contrary to what some posters believe, are too down on ourselves. I WISH we had more confidence and support of our team.

Which is exactly my point. To conclude anything else re: ice size "who can and who can't play on it is" is a rather simple minded argument to make. I could get snarly and insult those who try to make that argument, but I've said all I'm going to say on the topic. At least for now. :)

Wouldn't other countries having more and better players. Ow a days be a possible reason why Canada has struggled at the WC more often lately?

We have better players as well.

Other than our 3-peat, we have always struggled at the WC.

If you can only read what is written on Russian forums.. let me tell ya, it's a treat. It's dirty, nasty and insulting. I'll translate a few at sometime and make my own thread.

I still think it is a cultural thing. Just like the Russian players mocking other team after a win. It is not something we would do.

What is the weather there like? It is BRUTAL here. Worst winter I have seen in my lifetime.

Canada seems about the same to me. Outside of a bit of lull in the mid-90s drafts they always churn out lots of great players.

Russia was in shambles after the Soviet era but has gotten back on track recently, Sweden is much better now than they were 15 years ago, the US as well which was not doing anything outside of one window of players for most of its history

Canada is doing better. The U.S. and Sweden as well. Russia is treading water.
Finland, the Czechs and Slovakia have taken a step back in recent years.

On paper, the best teams in 2014 are...

Canada
=====
US
Sweden
Russia
=====
Finland
Czechs
Slovakia

on paper, Anaheim should fight with Edmonton for a wild card and colorado should take another top draft http://www.examiner.com/article/2013-2014-nhl-season-predictions

but team doesnt work as a sum of individuals

They sure schooled the Americans last year

Yeah, last year wasn't pretty for them. Overall though, it's been a lot better from where it was at a decade ago when they were a lowly 7th in the IIHF World Ranking. The KHL and its feeder league the MHL have been good for Russian hockey overall (just not on their # of NHL players obviously).

Why even debate this? There are an infinite number of permutations, and only one of them will happen in Sochi.

Having too many great players can be a hindrance. Of course these days Canada is actually quite careful about the team balance, but still, what is the average ice time for these players? It's not always an easy thing to play 10-12 mins instead of 20...

Im curious how fast the Canadian team will be used to the bigger rinks.
The players as well as the system.
I see some players on the roster who will be great. Other players will have problems.
Jamie Benn for example didnt look to good at Lockout. Giroux was impressive btw.

Why will they dominate?

Its simple, because they are Canadians. When they are in bad form, when they are in mess, they are still favourites. Big one. Maybe they are not always the best, but all time they are in the top.

The first 3 games are against Austria, Norway and Finland. Austria has 2 NHL'ers on the Team. Finland has excellent goaltending but the rest of the Team is just...meh. and Norway only has one NHL'er. Canada should walk all over each of them.

Ice size isn't as big a factor as some think. A lot of these players from the the euro teams have been over here since their jr days so it's as much as a transition for them as it is the US and Canadian teams.

I think this is actually one of the main reasons why Canada might bow out in the Semis.

They are arguably in the easiest group and then likely having an easy QF opponent..team may pick up some bad habits and may not be ready when they suddenly have to play either a USA or Russia level opponent...the bar would be set way higher and they may not be ready...in 2010 I thought their loss to the US was an eye opener.

Canada always starts slow, so maybe these countries would be tougher to beat. I wouldn't be surprised if Finland wins the PR game.

Canada will not dominate in Sochi because:

-Russia has the home ice advantage.

-Big ice.

That's what Russia thought in the 1972 Summit Series when Canada had to win it's last 3 games in Russia. Guess who won???

Anyone else wanna mention Canada has never won Hockey outside of North America!

I don't care is we dominate or not. I would be more than happy to have us win every game by one goal. It might be more fun like that.
