I still say we start Ullmark against Carolina, I still don't trust Forsberg that much and we should let Ullmark get a quick bounce back.

I think the plan was to win vs Phile with Ullmark and start Forsberg here to give Ullmark a rest and get Forsberg a game...

The 1st part didn't happen but the 2nd part will go ahead

I'll give you last night's game, but what are the other games?

Actually, I will take that back and he hasn't single handedly lost us any games except the last one but he has failed to make a safe or two when we really needed it to win some games, that we did ended up losing.

He was brought in solely to be an elite goalie and win us some games which he keeps failing to do.

He arguably lost wins vs Buffalo and maybe NYR. Perhaps a loser point against NYR. So he single handedly lost 5 points this year, which is a huge percentage.

I can agree with pretty much all of this, Ullmark needs to be better, and hasn't lived up to expectations so far, I still have faith he can turn it around and be a key part of the future but there's no denying he hasn't been great so far

We scored a combined two goals in those games, if he lost them what's the expectations, a shutout every game?

I confused Vegas and Buffalo losses as he allowed a 5 spot against each. I guess the expectation is for him to not get consistently outplayed by the opposing goalie when the team plays strong. Need to get one point when we dominate regardless of getting goalied.

At least a .900 save percentage. 5 GA in vegas on 27 shots and 2 on 18 shots isn't good enough for a guy that got extended to an $8 million aav.

Its early and this has to turn around,

GSAX
27th 8 gp Forsberg .8
62nd 10gp Ullmark -3.9

Not that we'd want to compare

28th 7gp Korpisalo .8

We really don't want to compare
2nd Talbot 10gp 9.3
4th Daccord 12gp 7.6
8th Gustavsson 13gp 7.1

Senators are much improved in team defense .. so that can't be used as an excuse for poor goalie stats
Expected goals against per 60 Sens are 3rd best in the NHL at 2.07... which is excellent and they are 6th in expected goal differential per 60 at .3

Our actual goal differential per 60 is 23rd at -.3

Not sure we've heard this before but We Need Better Goal Tending

Stats are from MoneyPuck 5on5 team stats

U gotta let Ullmark run with the net. Was beyond dumb to not let him rebound especially after securing 5/6 pts.

Can’t confuse the team securing points and playing well vs individual performance. The team can play well and win, while one key player is not performing.

It’s like saying Leafs would be stupid to bench Reaves when they secured 5/6 points. Correlation not causation.

Hopefully Ullmark goes on a nice streak here and all is forgiven. But right now he is titling the ice in the wrong direction vs league average goaltending, and we are paying for top ten tender. He needs to be better, and can. Whether he does it seems 50/50 given his flaws so far.

Why? Ullmrk hasn't earned the net, you cover his and Forsberg salaries and it’s a complete toss up who’s the better goalie. we aren’t sacrificing a season waiting for Ullmark to show up

If legit he loses the next game and you go back to Forsberg and he wins, you’re plying Forsberg until he loses again If Forsberg won last game he’d be in the net tonight, it’s time everyone carry their own water.

In his 10 starts this season Ullmark has a sub .900 save percentage in 7 games.

Go back to last year and it takes 20 games for him to play 7 games below .900 save percentage. That’s from January 6 to his final start in April, so consistent in Boston and he didn’t bring that here at all

5 of his last 6 starts he has. Sub .900 save% and he’s 2-4.

That's funny because I don't trust Ullmark. I would start playing Forsberg for 3 games in a row to let him get in the groove.

Ullmark doesn't seem to have bounce backs. He has bounce downs.

It is worrying to me because Ullmark has been so great historicaly that it can't be anything other than old-age/injury.

I don't think it his mental side or he wouldn't have lasted in the league this long.

If we're going to break down his starts:

He won us the Florida game.
He lost us the Vegas and Philadelphia games.
He was bad against Buffalo and Edmonton, but so was the team, so I don't put it all on him.

So for this year, he's cost us 2 points, and he's only "won" us 1 out of 10 games.

We need better than that, because a $3M can give you that.

He's supposed to be a Sorokin, Oettinger level guy.

It is like the Sens are the Oakland A's acting as a farm team for other teams.

We build goalies up and then we let them go!

People will claim it's our defense but ignore that there are stats like Goals Saved Above Expectged that actually isolate goaltending performance from team performance.

After last night's game Ullmark is now -6.2 GSAX, meaning in 11 games he's given up 6-7 more goals than should be expected given the scoring chances he's facing.

That puts him solidly in the bottom 10 of goalies in this league. We won't make the playoffs with Korpisalo-esque goaltending from Ullmark. Just won't happen.

It's just classic Sens luck to acquire a guy with the best save percentage of any active goalie in the league and not a single sub .900 SV% season going back 15 years, and then he comes here and completely flops.
Meanwhile 3of the top-8 (or so) goalies in the league this year are former Senators.

Sure is disappointing. We finally bring in a guy worth believing in and he can't get it done. At least last year Korpisalo being bad was predictable, this just feels like a gut punch.

Well said.

I never got that upset at Korpisalo sucking because it's pretty much what I expected.

Ullmark sucking after being consistently above average in his entire career feels like BS.

Maybe instead of killing ourselves to block pucks isn't the way in the regular season for us.
For years now in ottawa I've heard about the need to block pucks. We end up screening our goalie and if it gets through...

I wish we'd box out and not let other teams players screen our goalies. Dude can make saves.
What are we doing to help that?

It's also why I'm not prepared to throw in the towel yet, because I really don't believe he's this bad, but tough to turn around the momentum sometimes and might wait until next year if that happens, which may be too late for this group. But ya, of all the turns of events of the rebuild, this might be the hardest to stomach so far. I don't fault SS and would have done the same. As much as I never believed in Korpisalo either, atm Ullmark sure looks a lot like Korpse did last year. Just pucks going through him as he looks meek and confused and too deep/small in his net.

I'd be shocked if he doesn't turn it around, but the question is when that will happen and if it'll be too late to make the playoffs this year.

The East is pretty competitive this year. Would be hard enough to make the playoffs getting league average goaltending. Zero chance if this continues for much longer.

I do wonder if something is still lingering from the preseason groin pull and he just feels the need to play through it because of the weight of the contract,
