I hope this doesn't shake his confidence. Games like last night happen but he needs to be so much better. That OT goal made me sick.
He said he’s going to play it the same way every time.
Anyway not to pile on the guy. He needs to forget that and regroup.

Ullmark seemed sad about how he played in his post game comments. His eyes were going back and forth 100 mph during the press scrum. I really hope he finds his A game more often than his B game this year or else we will be golfing in April once again

Idk how anyone wants him to play it any differently, there was literally nothing to shoot at, that was a one in a million situation where somehow it squeezed through. I guess he needed to be tighter against the post to seal it, but there was zero daylight between him and the post.

If any sens player took that shot in OT people would be screaming about how you can't just give up possession like that but somehow it got through, so I guess it's the right play, Ullmark needed to make that save, but I still have no idea how that got through there.

Exactly. Can't blame him. He played perfectly. He just didn't get the bounces.

Describe how you think he should have played it differently, what alternate positioning should he have taken? Did you want him to challenge the shooter more, like, I'm trying to understand what the expectation is here in terms of how he played that is. It seems like the answer is going to be some variation of don't allow a goal, with zero actual insight into what playing that differently looks like, because frankly, he played it the way you are taught to, the issue isn't how he played it, it's that the puck found a way though him. Seal that post tighter I guess, the how isn't important because from your couch you don't have to worry about that.

My expectation is to stop the puck. Like actually track it and make sure your body blocks it. Not just be a statue in net and hope it hits you.

I apologize for the sarcastic response earlier, but we just need a stop. I thought the picture was funny because it doesn't accurately describe the situation. It's like me using this picture:

"Look, I don't know how that goal went in on the short side mid height. Lalime is literally blocking the whole area where the puck went it. It was a 1 in a million shot that found a way through a hole. I guess you could say he should have used his blocker instead of reaching around with his trapper, but the Leafs had pressure and he wanted a stop in play. 998/1000, he would catch this shot and no one would be talking about it"

When it's like, "just track the puck properly and make the damn save."

I mean, you're showing a goal where there is tones of daylight and he isn't sealed againt the post at all. That is an example of a guy playing it wrong, and getting beat. I asked what Ullmark should have done different, you show me Lalime doing it wrong? Like I said, you have no clue how Ullmark should have played it any differently, that seems abundantly clear at this point.

If he's worried about the pass across I want him deeper in his net so he gets a better push off while also making it easier to seal the post.

If he's not I want him further out like a goalie like Carey Price would be so he's bigger to the shooter and live with the fact that he misread it if there's a pass across.

Instead we get this weird middle ground where his skate is on the post and he's sealing the bottom with his stick and the awkward holy between his torso and the post with his catching glove arm. If Michkov or whoever that was passes it, he's not making the save. He didn't make the save on the shot either.

This was a confidence thing. He's a positional goaltender and I'm trying to understand the logic of what he's doing on that shot and I don't get it.

If he wants back in on Saturday, give him the chance. Otherwise rest him and give Forsberg the start.

There is actually no daylight where the puck went it. You see a bunch of net on the right...puck didn't go in on the right. You see a bit top left, he didn't score top left.

He scored 1-2 ft off the ice on the left side. Lalime is 100% blocking all of that net in the picture, therefore is an exact comparable to your picture. Both pics show the goalie blocking the area where the puck went in...therefore your logic is "they were blocking that whole area...what more could you expect from them?"

A save. We expect a save.

You've identified what some fans are (or at least I am) expecting from their soon to be 8.5m/yr goaltender in overtime in a game where the team is scraping and clawing for every last point they can get.

Not to mention the two prior softies that also just seemed to pass through him and in like he wasn't there.

His salary sets expectations. I want him to do these things and be awesome.

There was no pass across option,

Further out where exactly? He's using the RVH technique with his skate against the post to allow him a push off to get across, exactly what goalies are taught to do against bad angle situations where a player could go for the wrap around. He's sealing the post with his body, he played it right, it just got through.
Instead we get this weird middle ground where his skate is on the post and he's sealing the bottom with his stick and the awkward holy between his torso and the post with his catching glove arm. If Michkov or whoever that was passes it, he's not making the save. He didn't make the save on the shot either.
Again, it's what they are taught to do. there was no pass across option the other two flyers were at the blue line, he's defending a bad angle shot, and a wrap around.

He's doing what goalies are taught to do in that scenario. It's a shot that shouldn't be going in, so clearly there was a puck sized hole that he needed to tighten up on, but in terms of his positioning, he's doing it right,

The best goalies in the league do not play it like that.

Can somebody explain what was the idea behind signing Ullmark to a massive contract extension before playing a single game? With the goalie history this team has had in the last decade?

The ultimate high risk low reward move. Nobody would've blamed Staios for losing him if he had a Vezina-caliber season and demanded $12M in the offseason. Late 1st pick for a Cup run is still a great deal.

This goal doesn't happen if he saves one earlier in the game.

the idea was that his ~250 games prior to becoming a Sen are sufficiently indicative of his talent level and future performance and we wouldn't learn much in the grand scheme of things from 10 games this season?

Yeah...watching that....not sure what to make of it. He sounded really down and fatigued, but his eyes were all over the place.
