Hours later this is still blowing my mind. I would have preferred rehiring Tim Murray to bringing Ruff back. Murray would have made more sense. At least you could make the argument that he was inexperienced and has maybe gotten better in in interim. Ruff has spent the interim underachiever and getting fired for the exact same reasons he got fired the first time in Buffalo. Just mind blowing how utterly stupid this is.

Any major hire the Sabres org has to meet 3 criteria:

1. Best hire
2. Who Terry is willing to hire.
3. Who will take the job.

Under those 3 circumstances I think Lindy is in the top tier.

Pro's: I think this could set the stage to push Terry a step further back from hockey decisions and/or an eventual promotion of Lindy to POHO. Even if this whole Adams/Ruff era fails I would rather Lindy hire the next GM than Terry.

Cons: They fired Donnie 6 days ago. They either didn't even try and hire another candidate or there are a huge amount of candidates that don't meet no. 2 or no. 3 above. Both are giant red flags for the org.

Im wondering if the fact that they identified Ruff and had conversations with him was the only reason they fired Granato in the first place. This has Terry written all over it. Would he have paid Granato to not coach if it wasn’t Lindy?

Tim Murray has not worked for any team since he was let go by the Sabres. He has not improved in any way shape or form and has clearly been blacklisted because he was a drunk leaking trades to random strangers at Bada Bings

I works still prefer Murray. Drunks can stop drinking. Lindy is never going to be a good enough coach. At this point it's as proven as it can possibly get. He's pushing for all time leader games coached without a cup, and depending on what Florida does he may take the lead with Buffalo. Which I guess would be fitting but I just don't understand why the f*** Buffalo (Pegula) is like this. Just hire competent people. Get competent players. It's not rocket science. Why do they keep doing this shit?

He’s not a competent coach? The man took NJ from a 63 point team to a 112 point team LAST YEAR. Incompetent coaches don’t do things like that….ever

What does this mean? Lindy actually had his team in the playoffs last year, helped develop some great forwards in jersey. He has made the playoffs with every team he has coached. More stats pointed to Jersey being incredibly snakebit at the beginning of the year, and then having awful goaltending.

Granato doesn’t deserve the respect Lindy should have as a coach. I like Granato. I’ve defended Granato. But to call someone ignorant for saying Granato is a reason we didn’t make the playoffs is not a fair approach.

And then, to use anecdotal evidence like “I’ve seen lots of posters…” is a bit weak to claim people to be ignorant

You know who else hasn’t gotten a job like the one Buffalo fired them from? Literally every coach here since Lindy. Bylsma, Housley, Ralph, gardening gloves…not one has gotten another look as an NHL head coach in a league where retreads are constant. You know who has gotten two different organizations to hire him as head coach since we let him go? Lindy Ruff.

Meh. He’s certainly not the worst choice they could’ve made, but I don’t think he was the best option either. Still the best coach we’ve hired since Ruff, though, so hopefully he can end the drought.

Agreed. He was in my second tier of potential candidates. He's coached some good teams atleast.

A) Paul Maurice winning the cup would somehow prove Lindy can’t?

B) Andy Reid was proven to not be able to win the Super Bowl at one point too…

C) if McKee doesn’t develop a staph infection I think they win in 06…so a staph infection could very well be the reason you think he isn’t competent…

Also I think it's pretty clear that we have another person in the organization who is willing to tell Terry / Kevyn to f*** off when they're doing the wrong things. I don't think Lindy would be back without knowing his voice is gonna carry weight.

Do you know what happened after they fired him? Not saying Lindy is perfect but he's not the reason for all of their woes. Losing Dougie, their PP crashing out and refusing to get a goaltender is more of the reason for that.

For those of you upset by the speedy hire of Ruff-I would think that for a few months there has been evaluations of options -I suspect other real options were not really on the table so need for other performative interviews. Ruff will quickly determine who is a hockey player and who is nice skater who plays some hockey...

I didn't say that. I said it would put Lindy #1 on the all-time list of NHL coaches for most games played without a cup. There's probably more records for him too. I haven't looked but I would image he's pretty high on a bunch of futility lists. Has he made a finals since '99?

There are plenty of legitimate reasons to dislike this hire and the process of this hire.
