Lindy Ruff has been fired

Question is, who is the replacement?

I pray that Regier is putting a call in to Barry Smith....

I have no words for this awesomeness

Let me save you the effort and just wish you "Happy Birthday" and "Merry Christmas" at the same time - more than anyone else, you've sure been waiting for this present!

Fire all the assistants or it's meaningless

Agreed - God forbid they promote Patrick or Adams or Numminen.

wait... Derek Roy isn't on the team and Lindy Ruff isn't coaching it?

****... what is my purpose?

Miller is still on the team, right? You can still rekindle those rants :sarcasm:

But Pegula is still mentally handicapped because he waited two calendar years to evaluate.

:sarcasm:

Frankly I'm surprised only because I thought they would wait until the summer. So, this season is officially shot.

Right?

This is brilliant.

I was in the sparsely-populated chat last night, along with Jame and a few others. With both Roy and Ruff gone, I fear Jame will now take up knitting. Man-hug, bro...

As I've posted before, I was watching on TV the game where Billy Smith intentionally took out Lindy Ruff's eye. Along with Rip Simonik, I know of no other individual with service to the Sabres in all 5 decades of their existence, though there may indeed be others. A sobering thought, indeed.

Regardless of the change in coach, (and Ruff's new role and duration, and/or lack thereof), more changes are needed in Talent, System, and Effort in order for Buffalo to legit compete for the Cup. To that end, I hope this is a (certainly Very Big) first step.

From Journey "Where Were You?"

I wouldn't know what the hell was goin' on
Someday you're gonna break
So don't try to get yourself straight
You're just a little too late

Where were you?
Where were you?
Where were you?
Where were you?
(When they fired Lindy Ruff?)

i can't wait to hear the arena reaction on saturday

I doubt it will be much different if the Sabres play poorly and the replacement is only an "interim".

He wanted so badly to be the one to bring the Cup to Buffalo. It's too bad he couldn't get there.

Heck, I'm more worried about getting RJ a win before he passes away....

It's bittersweet, but it was time. Lindy will get picked right up.

I'd bet my house that Davidson swoops in from Columbus and hires Ruff. He always spoke highly of Ruff and with the new housecleaning there, it'd be a natural. Todd Richards isn't JD's or Kekalainen's pick.

Kevin O just speculated Randy Cunneyworth could take the job. I saw him last night at the Jets game and talked with him. Maybe he is already in talks?

Oh no not rolston, bobmac says likely replacement

I hope Ron Rolston does not take the Sabres job

If interim coach that's okay. If long term, GTFO

Cunneyworth? Blech. Didn't like him in Rochester, don't want ex-Sabres.

If it ends up being Rolston or Cunneyworth, there's no way it isn't on an interim basis. The FO has tested my patience the last year or so, but they're not that stupid

It would be an admission of panic if the Sabres announce Rolston as an interim pick - it'd only confirm that firing Ruff wasn't thought out or planned in advance but just a kneejerk reaction to the current situation. And bringing in Rolston (with only 1 year of pro experience coaching) would have to be sold as an interim filler only to minimize the learning curve of the new coach.

Cunneyworth, on the other hand, has been outside the organization for awhile and worked with Miller, Vanek and Pominville. I could see Regier thinking he would be a safe option not that different from Ruff and someone who wouldn't challenge his own job security.

If the Sabres bomb the rest of the year, I hope Pegula buys Regier out as well. Something tells me that eliminating Ruff isn't going to fix much....

Ok, I'm pleased. GTFO. You should have taken it upon yourself to step down.

Interim coach is the way to go now. It is a short season. Consider it more like a mid-season firing during a regular length season. That happens plenty.

If they players play hard now, so be it. If they falter, then you get two bonuses. A higher draft pick and knowing who to keep and who to jettison.

Honestly, I think Regier should go as well.

This roster is very limited and - while I think it was in the best interest of both Buffalo and Ruff to move one - no coach is going to turn this mediocre team into a winner.
