I'm gonna do it anyway.
Suffice to say, most people prefer 2-2-1-1-1 because they feel it gives the higher seed the better advantage, which is fair because they had a better record.
I totally disagree with that.
I would much rather have 6 AND 7 at home. Those are your deciding games. In any kind of close series, only the higher seed gets a chance to close it out at home.
It's also law of diminishing returns. If you give us two games at MSG, I'm very confident we're winning 2/2. I'm less confident we win three straight. Even less we win four straight. If you give us ten straight games at MSG, 6-4 is outstanding. That's .600 hockey. I think having three straight home games is a lot of pressure to win all of them.
I think it would actually be harder for the Lightning to beat us three straight in Tampa than just win two and then steal one in MSG. If that does happen, we have to go there for game 6 and they get a chance to close it out at home despite being the lower seed. In a 2-3-2, even if they go up 3-2, they STILL have to play two at MSG. They HAVE to win the series at MSG.
It's somewhat subjective and the answer probably changes depending on the context of the series. After losing game 4 bad, do we ever get out of PIttsburgh if game 5 is there? Probably not. At the same time, it was huge for us to not have to go to Carolina back-to-back games. They probably win game 6 and have the mojo going into a very different feeling game 7. So it's close.
But if I had to pick one as the higher seed, I want both games at home. As the lower seed, that game 6 at home is often very huge. I think 2-3-2 benefits the higher seed in most cases.
