Lighting changes at staples

The atmosphere feels dead because you can't see the crowd going crazy. I guess we'll see how it looks tonight with the preseason game on FSW.

Yeah maybe, but you're upset about it and you haven't even seen it yet. Besides, were talking about lights here... If that's the only problem we have, I'd say we're doing pretty well.

So would I....you know, I didn't say I was going to kill myself over it, geez.

Looks good, I don't want to see the fans after a goal anyway, I'd rather see Magnum PI smile and a skating monkey.

What about the players

Any word from the Kings players on if they notice the change? If so, what are their thoughts?

"If it's dark, the atmosphere will be dead"

I don't recall there ever being a ruckus atmosphere inside SC with the old lighting other than the OT game winners in the playoffs and the final 5 minutes of the NJ series…..

Do people actually pay attention to the atmosphere NOT on the ice??????

So, first impressions?

I thought it looked EXACTLY how I hoped it wouldn't...dark and gloomy. Makes Staples look cheap. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get used to it.

was at the game yesterday and I didn't notice a difference, watched the replay and I did notice the change but then again I was aware of the change so I looked for it but once the play started I was so focused on the action I forgot about the lighting, its a non factor for me.

Am I in the minority in thinking that not only the crowd but the players and ice look substantially darker with more shadows? Not a huge fan so far.

Really can't say it looks any different in the arena. I can see the crowd and players same as the past three seasons.

I watched the last couple of games at home on TV and it does look markedly darker - both the crowd and ice surface.

I have only watched on tv so far, but did they turn the lights back up a bit or am I just getting used to it? I forgot about the lighting since the Edmonton game.

Well, the LED lighting is just as bright in the arena as the previously employed lighting was.

I think the dynamics between the LED lighting and how the television cameras collect the light is causing the darkening of the ice surface and the crowd.

Ah good call. I bet they adjusted the tv cameras as I don't think it looks nearly as bad as it did against the sharks. I envy you all that get to go so often!

I meant on tv, haven't been to a game yet this year.

You can see a huge bright spot just above the circles in each zone and behind the nets it's pretty dark.

Maybe it's just all the booze, I dunno.

To me, watching on TV, it is darker. Noticably darker. Looks like lighting for hockey games in the mid-80's.

Just watch some highlights from the Cup Final vs. the Rangers at Staples. The difference is stark. It was MUCH better last year. This year it looks like they're playing in a cave by comparison.

The LED lights aren't evenly distributed either. There's noticeable darker spots and shadows, particularly the faceoff circle nearest the Kings bench.

Needs a lot more tweaking.

Well, we ARE 4-1 with the new lights haha

This is what i was going to say. It reminds me of how it looked back when the kings would play teams like Edmonton who had terrible lighting in their arenas even for the 80-90's.

On tv its very dark, and so many shadows. There are 2 distinct bright spots on the ice at each blue line but around the net and in the corners its considerably dark.
I dont like it but i'll get used to it i guess...

I doubt we have seen the last of it at this stage. Likely there will be tinkering going on all season to get things as ideal as possible for inside the rink as well as on TV. Hopefully it gets better.

Right you are.

LED lighting, which had illuminated Montreal’s Bell Centre before any other NHL rink, was installed in Staples Center prior to this season. Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center has also followed suit with the energy-conscious display that brightens the playing surface but can leave the surrounding seating areas darkened. Players have spoken about losing track of black pucks that are silhouetted against the darkened seats, though the arena has heeded the lighting critiques and is continually fine tuning the display.

“We’re always looking to tweak it right now,†Zeidman said. “You’ve got to understand one thing, we put this in very quick. Once we got the go, we didn’t have a lot of time. I don’t have time for the arena to be down for two or three weeks. So our guys had to come in overnight. They had to work during two or three hour periods in between events. So we’re still tweaking it. In fact, Monday and Tuesday of this week we’re going to install 36 new fixtures that we believe will fix the issue that some of the players have with losing the puck in the first five rows.â€
