Ehhh I remember them being super high on him after they drafted him, Clark kept telling us how much the fanbase was going to love him.

I will say there was a very stark difference at Traverse city when Clark completely tore Lias apart to the media. That I remember vividly. It was bad enough that they took down the video and never re-posted it

I had never seen anything like that before or since from a head scout

Maybe Quinn has too much Tom Coughlin in him? Alienating all the young talent without getting such development from them...

what use is young talent if you can’t motivate them and get better results from them?

At least this puts to bed the debate about Clark and the inability to draft high end talent due to this franchises draft philosophy. It is a joke that after all these years we still have some of the worst center depth in the entire league.

They didn't learn their lesson when failing to come away with an elite player from the 2003 draft came back to haunt them 10 years later and cost them a Stanley Cup.

Yeah, just look at how he alienated Chytil, ADA, Fox, and Lindgren. Butchered their development.

I missed that video, can you elaborate?
It was a video posted at some point during Traverse city, I believe at the end of the tournament.

Chytil was injured and Lias was getting the 1C minutes and he didn't impress. Clark gave an interview to the media about the prospects at the end of the tournament, was asked about Lias, and he said somethings to the effect of "I don't know if Lias is tired or something but he played terrible" and he reiterated it and didn't look happy.

The video was only up for a short time, and it got pulled pretty quickly. I remember it at the time I thought it was incredibly harsh for Clark to say publicly. Which is why I assume the Rangers PR pulled the video and never put it back up.

Maybe I'm missing something but I know @Kovalev27 saw it as well

I think it's important to note that every GM has dings on their resume. No GM bats 100%. Those calling for Gorton's head for this are out of their minds. Way too early for any big decision like that.

Even Yzerman has some big misses like Connolly and Drouin over Jones, but nobody dares question him because he has an otherwise stellar track record and makes up for it in other aspects. Gorton on the other hand hasn't.

When Quinn was being asked about Lias, there was one question that stood out to me..

The Reporter asked if moving Lias up would spark him, and Quinn said yes. But, Lias was never given that opportunity. As a coach, why wouldn't you want to attempt this and see how it plays out? You want to try and set your players up for success, not failure. Playing 7 minutes a night with Smith on your flank doesn't sound like a good situation.

I agree that Lias should have went balls out every time he hit the ice, but when you're dealing with 19 and 20 year olds, you have to realize there's a different approach here versus a 28 year old vet.

This is the second kid who's wanted out of Hartford. I put plenty of blame on the kids, but you can't say the Rangers are not at some fault here. They drafted him, and they did a pretty crappy job developing him.

Great post, but this is what stood out to me most.

I’m not a Gorton fan, but I agree he doesn’t deserve the chopping block.

The troglodyte we have running our scouting department has had more than enough passes though.

I remember that the scout you refer to pushed for this selection, and not being happy about that aspect. I had to listen to the radio broadcast that night.

I think they traded up targeting Pettersson, and they intended to give Kallur credit for the pick. But once Pettersson goes off the board you have to abandon that plan and go BPA. If Clark thought Lias was BPA, then I’m sure he’ll catch some heat for this.

I just wonder if there’s something we’re not seeing going on in Hartford. Seems alarming to say the least, and you have to wonder if there’s something off with the coach or org down there. Hopefully we get a handle on it before any other prospects are affected.

you probably shouldn’t be drafting a guy 7th overall that all the pundits are saying could be an Oscar Lindberg bruuutal

Definitely. The guys that I wanted (Vilardi and Tippet) haven't amounted to much yet either, but I would much rather strike out swinging for the fence than trying to drop a base hit in short of the fielders.

He has every right to look out for himself and his career but that doesn't take away the fans right to crush him for asking for a trade.

If he was lighting up Hartford and the team wasn't giving him a fair shake, I could be more understanding. But he's done nothing since being drafted to help his situation. He's not even off his ELC and he's asking for a trade.

And to be honest, the Rangers probably know they drafted a poor player. The secret is out, the kid can't play at the NHL level. Edmonton straight up refused taking him without an add for this reason.

There's blame to go around for sure but asking for a trade now just leaves a sour taste

It just gets harder and harder to make the NHL when you're stuck in an imperfect situation. I'm sure Andersson was getting desperate and it's very likely that the Rangers didn't say anything to him that made it sound like things would change any time soon. I've been a hockey fan for well over 50 years. Stuff like this happens all the time in sports. Heck, the Dodgers were going to trade Jackie Robinson to the Giants! It was before my time, but my father never got over that (and the Dodgers moving).

I do think Andersson can play in the NHL. The situation is going to play out with some other team.

I noticed you didn’t include Kakko. I like all the players that you mentioned. They are all growing this year. We can’t keep butchering our top first round picks. Need to see more growth from the players who we invested most heavily in.

yeah he looked like he hadn’t slept in days and was horrified. It was so bad they actually took the video down

What has Yzerman accomplished? All that talent, no cups. Hell, his team missed the playoffs two years in a row shortly after he took over in Tampa. Those weren't rebuilding years for Tampa either like what's going on here in NY.
