Does anyone remember the really tall guy (6'7?) that played for the Rangers in training camp in 2006 or 2007? He also had a legendary porn stache at the time

Matt Maccarrone.

My own shout-out goes to all the failed deadline defenseman experiments.

Sandis Own-Goalinch
Bryan McCabe
Christian Backman
Dereck Morris

And we should also give some love to the rotating experiment of Moore to Hall to Dupuis which somehow ended landing us a fat bust in Bourret.

I was posting on the NY board at the time, but Al Montoya was supposed to be the next big thing for many years.

Matt Maccarrone.

That's him! Thank you

I am still offended by Slats giving Brashear a contract after he destroyed Blair Betts in the playoffs.
I was literally about to post about Brashear. That signing brought my blood pressure through the roof. Watching him as a Ranger I rooted for the opposite player to knock him tf out. Never hated anyone more

Alexei Vasiliev was supposed to be one of the reasons Neil Smith believed he could deal Zubov.

Dellapina had an article about the three elite prospects had coming up in 1998 - Stefan Cherneski (f you, Muckler), Wes Jarvis and Burke Henry.

Randy Copley was selected in the 2nd round in 1998 with the compensation pick the Rangers got from losing Messier.

I know exactly who you're talking about and it's not Mitch Fritz but I can only think of Mitch Fritz right now.
Steve McKenna?

I remember just before the 2002 lockout we were playing the Thrashers and put out a line of Sandy McCarthy, Steve McKenna and another goon (possibly Barnaby). Puck dropped and it was old time hockey. Center ice, they completely ignored the puck and just had at everyone. Was fantastic to watch.

Honorable mentions from that time:
Kamensky and his 13 expensive goals
Malakhov
Holik (still makes me vomit a bit)
Grosek (was supposed to be the next big thing in Buffalo)
Rem Murray

Mike knuble
Never forget Brian berard jumping roenick yo defend Dvorak
Marc Savard
Shameless rebump of Dan Blackburn

Also speaking of lil brothers of super stars
Fedor fedorov
Sean pronger
Marcel hoss
Kevin Hatcher
Paul Broten

Mallete hurt to give up at the time. That guy was a badass. I remember his 305 PIM season. I think He had over 40 pim in the last game of the season against Vancouver to push him over 300. In hindsight it was one of the most lopsided exchanges ever, and even more so because it was in our favor.

Simo Saarinen, like too many other young guys we've had, NHL career cut short by early injury

Jim Dorey and his 1 game (plus 1 PO game) NYR career

Vaclav Nedomansky finishing his career w NYR

Bobby Rousseau

Glenn Sather, #6, getting penalized for holding a jersey through a hole in his glove

Ron Harris, hard working tough journeyman with a clutch playoff OT goal! HockeyDB says he was 5'9", 175# - he played bigger than that

Mike Ridley

Bubba Beck

Interesting--Jim Dorey. Back in 1971-72 he was a late season additon on our defense for the playoffs. A very top 4 credible guy who played a physical game. He would have been a big upgrade over Gary Doak (also R.I.P.) or Ab Demarco. The Rangers got him from the Maple Leafs and in his first game he got injured and I believe his playoff game was the final game of the 1971-72 Stanley Cup finals. That off season marked the beginning of the World Hockey Association (aka the WHA) which started up with the idea of rivaling the NHL. A number of high profile players signed with WHA teams--many of which were throwing out a lot of money (for those times). Their biggest name was Bobby Hull but Gordie Howe would also return from retirement (I believe) but there were others like Pat Stapleton, Derek Sanderson, Rick Ley, John McKenzie. Dorey I guess wanted to return to Toronto and signed with the Toros. He continued on for several years as one of the better players in the league.

Bobby Rousseau won several cups as a member of the Montreal Canadiens. He was a small but very slick center/right wing. The Rangers used him more than less as a specialist or a fill in or as a 4th liner but he was always on the first power play unit playing point with Brad Park.

Glen Sather was also small--quite the agitator who played with edge. If you've ever wondered why Sather got Sean Avery and kept bringing him back......well Avery's game was similar though Sean was clearly a better overall player.

Ron Harris would show up in 1972-73--the season after our Stanley Cup run. I believe he came from the Atlanta Flames in a deal for Curt Bennett. The Rangers had been hit by a slew of injuries to their defense corps and gave up the young Bennett who would be a very good player for several years and would coldcock Dave Maloney (in his rookie season) a year or two later with a punch that would break his jaw. Pound for pound Harris was one of the toughest guys that I've ever seen put on a Rangers jersey but he had a very long fuse. He'd rarely take penalties but he was a scary guy to screw with.

Ahh, Christian Backman.

He had one hell of a year.
Him, Boyle and Callahan. All with limited talent, but the sheer will those guys brought that season really paved the way for the team to be a contender for the years following.

Nigel Dawes. Sort of where Vinni Lettieri is headed.
