OT: Let's Remember Some Guys

That goalie carousel in the early 2000s could be a list unto itself.

Here's 2000-2001 alone:
Richter
McLean
Hebert
Labarbera
Holmqvist
Yeremeyev

And that's without taking into account the rest of the roster:

Grosek, Forbes, Smrek, Ulmer, Gusarov, etc.

Don't get me wrong, there have been many frustrations over the couple of years. But some fans will (hopefully) never know the bleakness that was some of those late 90s/early 2000s teams. You didn't even have the hope for a brighter tomorrow.

100%. For me, it was extra tough because I became a fan in 96-97, so basically all I knew was failure. The formative years of my fandom, I legitimately thought I was a curse to the team. When they made the playoffs in 2006, it was one of my fondest teenage memories. It's also why the ten years or so that followed will forever be so important to me, despite not winning a cup. I remember vividly how soul crushing it was to be a fan in the dark ages.

I recall the guys in the booth joking about how Gusarov was pronounced. Goose-uh-rov or Goo-sar-rov. Or maybe I imagined that.
Kind of unrelated, but as a 10 year old or whatever, pre-ubiquity-of-the-internet, I remember thinking that the Rangers had two different players: Stan Neckar, who I'd see on the ice a lot and whose jersey I could read but for some reason Sam & JD would never mention in commentary, and Stan "Nets-cash", a player that for some reason I had never seen and could never find in the boxscore.

and again when Chmelar makes it 8^)

Howie Rose did Rangers radio back then. He took pride in pronouncing "Nets-cash" each time.

Speaking of goalies. Steve Baker was a 3rd rounder for us in 1977 and played for Union College when it was still a division 3 college program. The famed Ned Harkness was his coach and there was some kind of scandal and Baker turned pro and was a Rangers backup for a couple years.

Some guys I saw with the Binghamton Rangers—Sergei Zubov, Doug Weight, Alexei Kovalev, Tie Domi, Darren Langdon, Corey Millen, Corey Hirsch, Eric Cairns, Rob Zamuner (who never played a game for us), Mike Hurlbut, Shawn McCosh, Craig Duncanson, Peter Fiorentino.

Zamuner actually played a few games for us in the 91-92 season.

I think so. I got a Binghamton hockey card of Laviolette I’m pretty sure so I must have seen him. Peter didn’t make that great of an impression as a player I suppose. I remember Don Biggs having a monster of a season. Like 140 points. He was a gnarly little f*** besides—kind of like a Pat Verbeek. Zubov got sent down to Binghamton out of training camp in 93-94. He only played a couple games—one against the Isles AHL team that I saw and then was called back up and was a major part of the Rangers Stanley Cup run that year. Kovalev in his short time in Binghamton was just a one man show. He had the puck all the time and it was kind of chaotic watching the other teams chasing him around all over the ice. No one could get it away from him. His own teammates had a hard enough time getting it from him.

Laviolette's biggest selling point was being on the '88 Olympic team with Leetch. His NHL prospects were pretty dim once he was called up for his cup of coffee on Broadway.

Ruman Ndur. Nigerian born D who skated in 31 games in 98-99.

His career went steadily downhill and a few years later I saw him in many games for the never-to-be forgotten Danbury Trashers of the United Hockey League.
There's a wild documentary about them on Netflix right now. Some story.

I was a bit older for this one, but I remember seeing we drafted a guy named John Whitehall. Literally was not until we waived him and Montreal picked him up that I realized that was actually Johan Witehall.

On the topic of Montreal, up until age 10 or so I thought Montreal and "Mon-treel" were totally different places. Years later I found out my dad suffered from the same dumbassery as a child so I felt less bad about it.

Let's take this time to remember Filip Novak, who was flipped for Pavel Bure.

A little bit too sympathetic to the team and the Galantes for my taste, but a pretty wild tale. I still have my giveaway promo Trashers seat cushion a used to set on those cold metal benches at the DIA.

Taylor Pyatt. I remember one of my buddies saying he had such dreamy eyes haha

and Tom Poti

Looked up some players that played for the Trashers and in the Rangers system (Jeff State) and here are some guys from that era that I remember playing for the Pack and the Checkers, but had forgotten they had a cup of coffee with the Rangers:

Lawrence Nycholat, Alex Giroux, Josef Balej, Layne Ulmer, Jake Taylor, Chad Wiseman, Bryce Lampman, and Dave Liffiton

Layne Ullmer and Jeff Ulmer, always had them mixed up

SO many guys
(so many mistakes, like trading Tinordi's dad)

one of the most telling being '88-89 when Dean Kennedy, Ken Hammond and Miro Horava passed thru the NYR D-corps,
all wearing #6 and the Hockey News couldn't keep track,
put Hammond's photo on cover for article about journeymen D-men featuring Kennedy

Five minutes with Bob McKenzie - TSN.ca
"One time, you labeled the Kings' Dean Kennedy with the dubious title of being the NHL's "most average defenceman" and then put a photo of Ken Hammond on the cover."
I went to a hockey school at RPI where Ken Hammond was one of the instructors. Ken bounced around a bit and he was giving my little brother a hard time about something, he was a goalie about 11years old. Ken called him some nickname and my brother fires back with "OK, Suitcase" freaking hilarious. He actually signed a photo for him at the end where he was wearing a Captain C in the AHL with "C is for Cuitcase"

I thought his Lightning jersey name plate looked good the couple of years they did the vertical arch style. That's the extent of my thoughts on zzzZamuner.

Curt Bennett is a name that Dave Maloney would probably not want to hear. Bennett played briefly for the Rangers and ended up on the Atlanta Flames and went on to a pretty decent career. In Maloney's rookie season he crosschecked Bennett who meanwhile was engaged with another player. After Bennett broke away from the player though he skated straight towards an unsuspecting Maloney and suckered him--leaving him knocked out cold on the ice with a broken nose and concussion.

I think we got Ron Harris for Bennett. Harris was a small D sometimes RW. Despite the anglo name he was a French Canadian. One heavy heavy hitter too and though he only fought very occasionally he was really good at that as well. I remember him scoring an OT goal in a playoff series we won against the Montreal Canadiens.

Harris was a great depth guy, a tougher, RH version of the role B.Smith provided last couple seasons

Bennet was a tall guy, only with NYR for a few months early '72-73

Played at Brown, they don't produce tons of players(see below**), but that is where Drury/'Pack had signed Giuttari from in '20

I recall a game, when i was in HS, i was sitting behind 7th Ave net, vs Blackhawks, while Bennett was NYR
at the far (8th Ave) end he got into a fight with Cliff Koroll and, as I recall (it was nearly 50 years back, fall'72) Bennett won decisively, it was my pal's dad's first/only NHL game

** Brown (ECAC) Alumni | Hockey-Reference.com
bunch of NYR connections here on list of Brown NHL'ers - Bennet, Steve King, Tim Bothwell, most notably
and even sorta Harry Zolnierczyk, who a couple years back signed w NYR but retired before attending training camp
and Bobby Farnham, who attended training camp ~4 years back but was released from PTO during camp

I well remember that OT goal against the Habs. I think the Rangers had tied it up very late, perhaps in the last minute, on a goal by Ratelle (I think).

Eh, I remember so many players i wiffed on: Bahensky, Falardeau, Kondratiev, Kloucek, Grachev… ugh.

going back a bit: Mike Ridley, Willie Huber, Jan Erixon.
