I'm glad to have JD here, but it's hard to argue that Howson has a greater propensity to make "Umberger type signings" than JD or the average GM. There is a great deal of inflation that comes along with the costs of luring players to Columbus, and beyond that JD himself isn't immaculate in his record.

The first thing JD did upon arrival in St. Louis, if I remember correctly, was to bring in Jay Mckee on a 4 year $16 million dollar deal. Mckee's game deteriorated somewhat, and was too slow in the post-lockout(2005) NHL. He was a much bigger bust than RJ Umberger, and Mckee was eventually bought out.

Jay Mckee and RJ are/were two different levels of players when in their prime.... no comparison.

this seems to come up a lot, and I'm always curious where these young upgrades over anyone in our current roster is coming from. From our staked forward core in the AHL?

This.

You can dream all you want about the first rounds picks but anyone there is going to SPR or staying put.

Unless we win the lottery (and then it will probably be Jones) I'm afraid you are right.

The most realistic way is through a trade or maybe a free agent signing like Damian Brunner. Although his current numbers aren't great but are better than all of ours.

Edmonton with a bunch of young guns and not so great D could be an interesting trade partner.

You would think so. But as you know they have that top group of "untouchables" and little else.

Maybe but I don't see their need for D to be quite as great as the other two. I assume we aren't talking trade deadline stuff?

Either / or

I would suspect that a D prospect for O prospect will be a summer trade. Now if a team is looking at an immediate effect I'm not sure we're their partner, but it's the deadline so anything is possible.

Mark Letestu, a UFA-to-be who would be a very useful deadline pickup, is expected to sign an extension with Columbus as soon as today.

Off topic, but, since we're talking about Arena District bars...

my wife and I stopped into the RBar, yesterday, before the game. She asked me if any of my "hockey buddies" were there and I told her there well might be some, but I had no way of knowing! It's a weird feeling thinking that, among a crowd, there are probably several people I interact with on a daily basis, yet I have no idea who they are. One day, we should arrange a place and time to gather and put faces to names (though, I suppose, some of you may not want to reveal your real-world identity!).

I wonder the same thing when I hear other fans in the seats or the concourses talking about something we've discussed on here.
