I really wish we'd get out on EK.

Long before we were reported to be interested, weeks ago, I predicted that EK would be the trade that blew up in some desperate, stupid organization's face and ultimately got their GM fired for making it.

Still feel that way and would prefer we not be the organization that shoots themselves in the face.

I was not expecting the Orlov signing at the time. That, to me, was a game-changer on this front. That gives a great defensively-minded partner for Burns, which makes EK far more sensible.

I look at EK the same way I look at Burns from last offseason, neither have their names on the Cup. This is that chance for them both before their careers are done.

I get the concerns, but a healthy EK is a damn good get and even better if he's motivated to lifting Lord Stanley.

Not sure if this has been posted or not but I doubt they’d let Ruff post this if they didn‘t fully expect the TDA trade to go through:

Yeah, I agree. I don't think that EK and TDA are related transactions. I think TDA playing the Ghost role has no impact on EK running the 1st PP and playing over 20 a night.

Upon landing EK, TDA and Orlov: Hey Brent, we know you gave it your all, put up by far the best season by a Canes d-man in a long time, maybe ever at 37 years of age, but we're not only replacing you on the top pair, we're removing you from the powerplay altogether. Hope you understand.

Wouldn’t say that why can’t they run 2 d in on of the units

And making you our top line power forward!!

Burns Aho Svech

I expect Burns to break 80 pts.

Because even when the Canes loaded with d-men for years have never really done it and even with a more loaded defense still kind of puts them at a disadvantage to running 4 forwards like basically every team in the NHL.

I think that if there's any player that understands the power of deference in order to create potentially one of the best defensive teams the league has seen in the cap era, it would be Brent freaking Burns. This is not the same as the San Jose situation where the team was sucking and the two were the only go-tos on their blueline.

Ya but nylander isn’t coming to Carolina and getting more then what aho is gonna get paid so I don’t see it happening unless he wants to take less but that doesn’t seem to be the case in Toronto
I see Aho at 9.5 million, Nylander at 9

Winners & Losers on NHL Free Agency 2023

Carolina Hurricanes: WINNERS

Only three teams have more regular-season wins than the Hurricanes in the five seasons since Rod Brind’Amour took over as head coach. Yet the Canes have not been able to reach a Stanley Cup Final in that time. A turbulent 2024 offseason looms in which, for now, Sebastian Aho and Brett Pesce become UFAs and Seth Jarvis and Martin Necas become RFAs, with several other prominent Canes going to market. So this summer marked a crucial window for GM Don Waddell to do something aggressive. In Dmitry Orlov, the Canes got the No. 1 free agent on the market and made the best defensive team in the NHL somehow even deeper. They also ran it back by re-signing the goaltending tandem of Frederik Andersen and Antti Raanta for a combined $4.9 million in cap space. With the waiver-exempt Pyotr Kochetkov still locked up four more seasons, the Canes are again three-deep in quality goaltenders. Still – keeping pucks out was not their problem. This is already the best defensive team in the NHL. The Canes finished 15th in goals per game this past season. It was thus crucial to find help at forward – and Carolina got it by signing Michael Bunting, an efficient scorer coming off consecutive 23-goal seasons, at an affordable AAV of $4.5 million over the next three seasons. One of the best teams in the NHL might have allocated its resources differently than I expected it to on July 1, but this team undoubtedly got better.
