The genius of the pending deal for TDA is that it's a deadline for San Jose to deal with CAR on Karlsson. If they can't swing a deal by July 9th (or whatever arbitrary date), the Canes trade for TDA and move on to entertaining other suitors for Pesce.

I don't get it either. I could have sworn Detroit has some prospects that are close. Almost like Yzerman is saying to them something like "If you want to play here, make me trade a roster spot for you".

Not sure that's a good strategy especially since some of these contracts look unmoveable, but whatever.
