we dont HAVE to trade anyone... we have the cap room to still sign a high end forward.... $9.1M left to finish out the roster of forwards and maybe a #7 dman.... we can still add a real difference maker on forward and have cap left...

Orlov could have gotten that with term if we were in more normal times. He's prone to some brain farts, but he's a heck of a dman. I've watched a ton of Washington over the years since my wife is a fan and I live in the area.

I mean 7.75 does seem high
Yeah, I'm feeling the same, but I'll be honest in that I'm not that familiar with Orlov.

iirc, Ovi was upset the Caps traded him though FWIW.

Since he's a LD, I'd assume that means Skjei is traded. No way we're putting a 7.75 million dollar defenseman on the 3rd pairing.

seems likely we trade one of skjei or pesce, but then again, we've got the cap so maybe the plan is just to ice the best d in the league next season.

is there are better 6 man group than slavin/burns/skjei/pesce/orlov/chatfield? and i think you can mix the pairings in a number of interesting ways to 'load balance' through the year.

Hurricanes sign D Orlov to two-year, $15.5M contract

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed defenceman Dmitry Orlov to a two-year, $15.5 million contract with an AAV of $7.75 million, according to TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston.
Orlov, 31, split the 2022-23 campaign between the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins, posting seven goals, 29 assists and a plus-12 rating in 66 games between the two teams.
The Novokuznetsk, Russia, native was acquired by Boston on February 23 and tallied eight assists in seven playoff games for the Bruins who were eliminated in the first round by the Florida Panthers.
Orlov spent last season playing out the final year of a six-year, $30.6 million contract he signed in 2017. The deal carried an average annual value of $5.1 million.
Prior to the trade with Boston, Orlov spent all 10-plus years of his NHL career with the Capitals.
Orlov, who was drafted in the second round, 55th overall, by Washington in 2009, has 64 goals and 209 assists in 709 career regular-season games.

Holy shit.

It's truly comical how much we focus so much on defenseman over the years with this core when we still need to add a good top 6 forward. "All your defensemen belong to us."

Guess the Canes aren't really liking the forwards available?

12 and 6?
11 and 7?

Try 9 and 9!
