And regarding the ongoing discussion about Cronin ... think about what CBus young forwards would be like if they had kept that deplorable dinosaur Babcock ...

Its never black and white, its both. You have to make smart picks, and you have to have structure in every level of your org to help young players develop into professionals.

Watching CBus' young forwards is kind of depressing compared to Ducks.
Chinakov, Marchenko, Voronkov, Johnson, Fantilli all have made huge strides compared to Ducks group of young players
And look at those players last year.

What major change happened in CBJ from last year to this year? they got a competent coach that didnt try to coach out all the skill and offense those players have.

Their coach last year was basically cronin level.

Edit: just saw you also mentioned this lol.

Mctavish, Drysdale Zegras, Minty and now Leo have all had stretches where the fanbase have wondered if they will ever live up to their potential. At a certain point you can't believe you've missed on every single top pick and have to start wondering about the system, development and culture of the ducks.

We have a control youth sample to compare and contrast with in Zegras.

What is crazy is that pre-rookie season Zegras was more productive offensively than the two seasons under Cronin so far.

We can apply this knowledge to say that Cronin has snuffed out the offensive prowess of our skilled forwards.

As for Drysdale, he's a different case. I think Drysdale would have thrived in this Cronin defense - though a small sample, it's an interesting offensive sample. Cronin has the same philosophy as Eakins with defensemen pinching often in the OZone to help out the offense in a man-scheme defense. This isn't new stuff for Drysdale and it translated well for him. Too bad he was made out of glass for us after a promising first two seasons in the league.

Here's our current defensive youth productions. We see LaCombe producing similarly to Drysdale, but over a larger sample. Zellweger is at 0.32 ppg. If you're a fast skating skilled defenseman, then your chances of scoring increases in this type of defense.
