I don't know, having to publicly say that you just have to ignore the development staff sometimes seems suboptimal.

There is a context with this that includes the off-season "voluntary" camp as well as the overall fitness fetishization that kind of weirds me out. The vibes are bad.

What is the "fitness fetishization" that you're referring to? As professional athletes, isn't it a good thing for them to be in optimal physical shape for the season?

He may be referring to the team over working these guys until everyone is on injury rotation throughout the season. It’s one thing to have good fitness, it’s another to break your body down without optimal recovery time.

Not only this, but verbeek's insistence on referencing it everytime he talks about player development.

Obviously fetishization is dramatic, but some of this stuff is becoming a little silly.

Thats what this is about.. I think the ducks were unhappy with how much time he spend back home.. Cant blame the guy.. Wanted to see his family.

At the end of the season he is probably under his stabilized weight so I would guess 5-10 of those pounds are from not playing every other night. He probably gained 5 pounds 3 weeks after the season ended without even trying. The balance is probably building muscle and a little extra fat for the long season.

Yeah, people are hearing “weight” as “muscle”.

Sure, but do we have any evidence that's actually happening? Or is that just people inferring it from Cronin talking about having practice a lot during the preseason?

Athletes should be in good shape. Young athletes in particular often have not built the habits that are required to obtain optimal fitness levels. If Verbeek identified that as an area where the Ducks can see improvement in their players' performances, I don't think it's silly to mention it. It's a pretty important part of player development.

I guess Verbeek wants some of his youths to rush to have man bodies today when they're still teens. Verbeek is trying to bulk up some of his players as soon as possible than a gradual rate. That was the point of his load mgmt with Carlsson and especially so with Luneau. Luneau complained about with the Ducks was be in the gym all of the time as he rarely got to play hockey last year. Verbeek wants his youths to become like Mac, but Mac was doing this in his early teens and got training from his brother, who was an MMA fighter or training to be one at the time.

In a way, it feels like there's a mold that Verbeek wants his young players to be like and be in lockstep. Verbeek is coming off like a mafia boss. "Young Carlo... I want you to gain 16 pounds over the summer. Da good kinda weight. Remember, I own you."

It’s pats team if he wants young physically mature men, that’s a plus in my book. Th de guys make millions of dollars. Time to work

Some highlights from his rookie year:

His puck skills are obviously excellent, but he's also sneaky-good at getting open in transition. Makes zone entries way easier. If he put on some mass this summer, he could break out in a big way next season.

Interested to see who he plays with.

The more I review some of the plays he made last year, he does remind me a lot of a lankier and taller Nick Backstrom. I mean that in terms of the cerebral play and outstanding vision in the neutral zone. Also has a shot that is sneaky good.

There is some sort offensive undertone to his game that imo puts him in a different category than Barkov ( I don’t love that comparison). Leo is not a defensive-minded player in the slightest.

Carlsson is definitely defensively responsible and defensively capable. He clearly wants to drive offense and has that ability, but he starts it with being in the right places in the defensive zone.

I think with carlsson he’s just going to make good read after good read after good read which is going to result in takeaways and nice defensive sequences.

I’m not sure if he projects as a smothering defensive blanket though. Maybe that’s him too but personally I see him growing more towards a player who biases towards his offensive game.
