I fully believe he's perfectly happy in columbus but i don't buy the narrative that he strongly preferred it over the Ducks
I think he would have been disappointed if he fell to SJ and returned to college. They are a bit further away in their rebuild than Anaheim and Columbus.

I'm sure he preferred Columbus due to their ties to Boston hockey, but it's hilarious that there's some perception that he would have held out and skirted playing in Anaheim if drafted by us.

No insanely competitive, high profile, top level collegiate athlete is going to forego playing in the NHL and the cash involved from both starting his NHL clock and endorsement money to sit around in the NCAA for multiple years in protest.

Obviously these kids are well-caoched, but watching that video i didn't get the feeling that Fantilli was relieved when the Ducks didn't pick him.
Because he wasn’t. Anyone he actually took that clip of him wanting to go to Columbus as him not wanting to go to Anaheim we’re grasping. Everyone has a preference, that doesn’t mean he refused to play in Anaheim.

Both will be good 1Cs and I hope both do well. Both very likeable players.
Columbus has long needed a franchise 1C and we were fortunate to have Getz for over a decade. Both teams are happy.
I don't see the pointing in downplaying one or the other just to make us feel better about our guy, Anaheim had a preference for one over the other and got their guy.

I agree and have said this multiple times. In every interview pre-draft he always gave the impression he wanted to go as a high as possible (which would mean Anaheim). He 100% looks disappointed, and I don't think it was disappointment at not going to the ducks, but disappointment on not being drafted at 2. My sense is he would have been very happy with either team, but from a competitive standpoint wanted to go two.

The whole thing with Fantilli wanting to Columbus came from one interview with Blue Jackets media team where he gave a justifiably biased answer to a specific question. We are not sure on the exact timing on the video, but I also would not be surprised if they conducted this interview when CLB had the best odds of drafting at 2.

Well we get a player who has skill like Getzy and we passed on a player who has physicality like Getzy but is pretty damn good at his own game as well. It is what it is I'm stoked to have Carlsson and would be the same had we picked Fantilli. That dude's great. He even went to ccongratulate Leo right after the pick was made, he has a fantastic attitude.

I was hoping we lose out the last 2 games (still feel dirty about it) so that even the worst scenario is outstanding, I was prepared for this

I just hope he doesn’t turn out like McDavid. The guy has never made it to the SCF and got swept in the lone conference finals. What a bust.

John

Imagine the nightmare of drafting a top-10 all-time player, ugh.

I thought Fantilli seemed like a class act too. I am actively cheering him on in Columbus which is uncommon for me (I'm a Ducks fan first, second, and third). I was jacked up on Bedard too but I'm not hoping for great things from him due to who drafted him.

I'm fine with it if he uses size to separate players and not drop the gloves/lay punishing hits. That's going to wear down his body quicker, leave that to role players. But he has size, he'll hopefully be more than a pure finesse player.

Oh I agree 100%, he should definitely be utilizing his size, which he already does.

I believe he will be better than them too but I do see some similarities, especially to Strome

I hear you even if I don't see the similarities, but if worst case scenario is Strome then it could be worse. Strome has had an injury riddled career so far but he's a pretty damn good player when healthy.

Yeah, I mostly watched highlights of him, which is hard to get that read of. And most of the scouting reports didn't really say much about how he utilizes his size defensively (or were more vague). They talked more about Carlsson's use of his size when protecting the puck. I'm glad he uses it for more than just puck protection, hopefully McIllvane/SHL coaches can get him to play better defense too (though from a lot of the metrics that were posted he's not bad at it?). If he can be a Kopitar level of impact or more, that would set up the Ducks for close to the next 2 decades.

Great point. From everything I've read, seen and based on his usage in the SEL he's ahead of the curve defensively for his age given his offensive skillset, albeit mainly on the wing. From my understanding, SEL teams are trying to win, so they wont put a horrible defensive player on the ice consistently. I don't think he's going to be a crazy point producer at the NHL level, but rather a PPG shutdown center in the mold of a Kopitar.

100% agree. I think that's a narrative a lot of people convinced themselves to think so they felt better about passing on Fantilli. For the record, I wanted Fantilli too.

And more frustratingly, I think the false narrative has been used to allude that the Ducks would have drafted Fantilli if he didn't spurn them.

When in reality, the only reason they passed on Fantilli is because they view Carlsson as the better prospect.

Carlsson said the league he plays in is "boring" because of the insane defense-first attitude.

Edit: I hope it doesn't stifle his offensive development over there. If Carlsson turns into some 40 point defensive stalwart I'll be pissed.

I see it with Strome for sure. Ryan Johansen is another name I’ve thought about, but I don’t think Carlsson will have a bad attitude like that. I think hockey IQ is a very important factor, and maybe the most important for an offensive player, but it isn’t the only thing that matters. And it’s not like Fantilli has poor sense.

I guess what I’m saying is yes hockey IQ is huge but You do need skill to execute these plays and you have to be able to move fast in this league. I think he’s got good hands but the mobility is what I’m a little concerned about and it’s something that Fantilli blows him away on. Carlsson will put up numbers but it’s gonna be interesting to see how big those numbers are.
