News Article: Lebreton

couldn't give a rats ass if the team owner was a female/non-binary/trans or if they are hard right or hard left.

Being progressive and fighting for social change is definitely a plus.

But selfishly the only thing I care about is someone that can come in and spend to the cap and over with LTIR, management, and coaching so this team can win a cup before I die.

Before you come at me and say those guys/folks/girls don't exist look at Thomson Reuters who own the Winnipeg jets with over 50B in assets. They couldn't give a f*** to involve themselves in the team operations and 100M~ in annual team expenditures is pocket change.

Winnipeg loses about $5 million more a year than Geener did. the difference between what they spend and what Ottawa spends is mostly covered from higher gate revenue, not an owner’s loss.

This story plays out In nearly every city other than the odd exception like Florida.

Is it weird though?

This place isn’t most fans. Most fans are looking forward to seeing what happens this summer and beyond, and are pleased with all of the changes that have happened to the brand since EM’s passing.

This place is for obsessive fans, and bored folk with nothing better to do with their time.

Here’s food for thought: a bunch of middle aged dudes proposing a list of people they fantasize about buying the team, is unsurprisingly a group of old rich dudes. of course it’s not seen as an issue or weird to folks in here, it matches the demographic.

It’s always the same story… I don’t have an issue with age or gender, I just don’t think these young girls can successfully own the team, and I’m not willing to give them a chance…. Just makes me laugh is all.

And as for Oprah… it’s nice to know that you ‘take’ one of the wealthiest humans as the owner of the team, it truly is a grand display of inclusiveness! Lol
The malaise around Melnyk was definitely not just this board, the vast majority of casual fans I’ve interacted with felt he was a problem, just not with the same venom.

My only issue with the current ownership situation is lack of money to do it right. I want ownership that hires a good group of front office people to run the team arm’s length from the owner. Leblanc and Crow are great but we have Dorion running the entire Hockey Ops with a barebones staff. Anna and Olivia Melnyk could be great owners in theory but they are not wealthy enough to own a successful NHL team.

Doesn’t matter anyway, new ownership coming

Yah, Sens got Lebreton.
I heard without OSEG, but it’s possible it just wasn’t mentioned or asked about.
Apparently going to wait until Watson is out before negotiating with the City.

Team will have a press-conference at Noon.
Bruce's latest article confirms that OSEG is not part of the bid and also alludes to major financial partner(s).

Holy hell, what a desperate take.

They were always going to build the arena,EM didnt have the money nor do his daughters...I suspect there is some movement on a sale which is likely the reason we are hearing about the deal being brought back to life

NCC is on its own timeline. Sale of the team, either partial or full was always dependent on today’s result. Lots of leverage goes to today’s winner.

For sure, but its gonna happen...There is no way the team will be run by his daughters,as I just cant see them having the resources available to satisfy the NHL Bog

Leverage was single sided. Less the team, you have nothing..Look at the chaos of Lansdowne. The 67's are junior hockey and junior fans..they cannot pay the $30-$40 parking it was hoped. They also cannot pay the high prices. Atletico Ottawa and their forerunners were junior hockey like..small numbers, low wealth. That left the Redblacks and their 10 dates and they tanked, so the 10 dates were only about 70-80% of desired. And so we see that condo's, restaurants and shopping do not cut it on their own.

A hockey team though! 40-50 dates. Concerts and other sporting events another 20 dates...now 70 dates at 15,000-20,000.. That translates to about 350,000-400,000 parking spots and 10-12 million. Good luck in getting that parking for the normal shopping, restaurant goers...No one will pay $40 to park, jut to go in and grab a meal at lunch. Again, Lansdowne is proving that.

A cool headed Eugene, one not dealing with serious health issues and embroiled in one battle after another would have handed it differently 5-7 years ago.

It would have been idiotic to award this to any group that did not have a firm grip (whether present ownership, or assured future ownership) of the team.

Surprised they’re waiting for Watson to be out of the picture. I had always assumed Watson took issue with Eugene himself, and now that he’s gone, that impasse would be lifted. Watson seems like the type who would love to be associated with a major project of this kind, even if he’s on the way out in the coming months.

Watson is taking a lot of heat for LRT and the negative association may have made him less attractive as a 'partner'. He is also leaving and this project should probably be better associated with whatever new leadership will be in City Hall. That's my take anyway.

What’s up with Bruce’s personal vendetta against Watson though? That was such a weird sidetrack in the article lol
Everyone hates Watson. ;) Goof ball mayor.

BTW

Mayoral Candidates’ decisions on developer contributions

This is the second municipal election that doesn’t allow campaign contributions from corporations and unions under provincial law, but it’s still a hot issue in local government.

Ottawa residents are more aware of land developer influence than ever, especially coming out of an official plan process that ended with an expanded urban boundary and new intensification targets.

Development firms can’t give money to municipal election campaigns, but Ontario residents who own or work for companies are free to contribute as regular citizens.

There have been candidates in the past who have chosen to decline campaign contributions from people associated with the development industry, but it’s a personal decision for each candidate.

Speaking of tracks, do you know what's having a hard time running on one? Mayor Jim Watson's LRT!

I get a personal displeasure with the man and his politics — lord knows I've been there a while — but I mean... be professional about your job. That's a pretty low bar to clear.

No honestly, especially considering he’s a politician. There’s no need to get political in a sports article lol

Watson has been as useless as a mayor as Bruce has been as a sports writer.

It's very weird to think that an arena is going to fix the (correct) perception of the LRT being a huge disaster. Wouldn't more people getting left stranded by trains that regularly stop showing up make the perception even worse?

Maybe they'll finally get LRT working properly but I don't see any of the horrible candidates to replace Watson doing that.

Assen na yo!

There definitely is a sale coming although I’ve heard some groups want a majority stake and some want the whole thing.

From a very reliable source, the girls honestly hadn’t decided what to do with the team up until a week ago.

They are talking, and they are very aware that they are in over their heads, but they want to try and honour their father by keeping it in the family.

Internally the expectation is that they will take on partners, but are having a hard time giving up “control” ie 50%+.

My understanding is that the investors are specific to the development of the Lebreton arena as well as any surrounding buildings they are allowed build, but I wasn’t pressing too hard for details, considering it should all be coming out shortly.
