Least excitement for start of a season?

Maybe if they're so hurt they're playing useless they shouldn't be dressed. What's the difference, him and others just quit on the team -> that's embarrassing. If and when the Jets make the playoffs hopefully a bunch don't quit trying because .... we never got to hear why they quit, just that they preferred to be lambasted in the locker room by the coach instead of in front of the media by the coach.

Extensions for Helly and Scheifele are great for the team.
I don't disagree at all, but as a player who constantly was praised for playing through multiple concussions, fractures, and torn ligaments as an example for my teammates, I know that sitting out to heal is viewed as a weakness in hockey. Playing through injury is considered a rally point for the rest of the team and is viewed as a positive. Look at the effort he's giving while being hurt, what excuse do you have? Incredibly we see it here with posters talking about Ehlers' low pain threshold, because he should be playing through the pain and the only reason he isn't is because he's not tough enough.

Cat is pretty stoked for the start of the season. He thinks it's gonna be a big year.

Yeah normally it is (viewed as rallying point for a team to have a good player play through injury). But, ,yeah, look at that (lack of) effort that directly lead to a Vegas goal in a playoff elimination game. Did some others look at that lack of effort and figure "yeah time to give up, head straight to the golf course"? If all the other Jets that quit trying and playing/quit on the team that night weren't injured what excuse do they have?

Put another way if most of the Jets didn't care enough to at least try and play hard (and not give up) at the end of the season in the playoffs why should Jets fans care enough to be excited for the start of a new season? Reading about the player extensions last night helped the excitement for a new season a bit but the real test is if and when they make the playoffs. Playoffs are where we, or at least I as a Jets fan, want to see maximum effort win or lose: at least try hard. Don't embarrass yourself as a player and in turn us as Jets fans by simply giving up. That is not acceptable for a pro athlete supposedly playing for a championship.

Lots of anxiety about the length of these deals. They are longer than ideal, but Chevy is likely betting on a rising cap. Based on projections for the cap increase in the next two seasons, and then projecting a 3% rise annually thereafter (which is about what it was pre-Covid), the projected cap hit for Scheifele and Hellebuyck in future years (compared to today's cap) will diminish to less than 7M.

It's hard to know how Scheifele and Hellebuyck will continue to hold up, but they are both very fit athletes that work hard to stay in shape. Neither of them rely exclusively on pure athleticism for success, so they might maintain effectiveness.

It is interesting how the cap value of 55 is about the same as it was when he signed his last deal and the consensus was its a steal.

Ofc you have to consider age and defensive decline but I think it's still a fair value deal and he probably could have gotten more elsewhere.

I predict we will be in a similar headspace as we were with Wheeler, though I don't think it will be quite as severe.

If Schiefele can transition his game and layer in better d as his production decline he can mitigate that.

As for Hellebuyck, as others have said elite goalies seem to be able to perform at that level longer, especially a guy like him who has sublime economy of movement and relies on great positioning. I'm not worried about that contact at all.

While i totally agree about how we played in game 5 of the playoffs last season i really think the change of personnel done since then the Jets are a more complete team than last season. New players , new captain, new contracts all are reasons , at least to me, to be pretty pumped about this season.

Gonna bump this thread and say no coincidence ticket sales and little excitement go hand-in-hand.
Not sure if it is this direct of a link. Most of the loss of attendance is due to the cratering of the ST base. The people I know that have dropped their ST's have done so not because they are any less passionate, but rather they are unwilling or no longer able to carry the financial burden anymore in the current economic climate.

I know ppl who got mini packs instead of seasons. It's completely $$$ related. Sports is the first to go when rent groceries gas etcetera cost of living go up and our wages stay the same
I'm hearing this as well - and it is $ related.
They were buying the complete season and selling of a number of tickets - they simply had no intention of attending all 42 games and could reply on demand to move a few less desirable games (or games where they didn't have room in their schedule).
That option is not as lucrative as it once was and they are avoiding the resell and buying only what they feel they can attend.

There's kind of a feeling that this group just can't get it done. I think that's true, but I feel there are good pieces here - the forwards are deep, the goaltending should be at least above average - if only Chevy could ever fix the defense...but fixing the defense has not traditionally been his strong suit.

No. Probably not. I mean if ppl don't have the excess cash to spend

I'm sure the economy is not the whole explanation. It was very hard to be positive about the team with those 2 on the way out and nothing appearing to have been done about it. They signed, what? 2 days before the season opened?

I usually don't resurrect threads... but I guess JFresh was right.

Not sure anyone saw us entering xmas break with
- Scheifele finding his inner Kopitar
- Pionk dominant
- Ehlers-Scheif-Vilardi as our best 1st line in years
- 14 players on pace for 25+ points - Scheifele on pace for 90 pt season
- Jomo equalling his 'record season'
- DeMelo and Dillon on pace for record scoring seasons
- Names still our 2C at xmas...
- Worst Specials in the league...

These things are all true and it's great to see, but it's hard to truly embrace it in light of what happened last season.

If Helle starts losing his mojo or the D softens up a bit and loses its edge among other things, there could be trouble. I guess it's a case of once burned, twice shy for me at least.
