The Tavares decline is very evident to me. I don't care about personal life, and this and that.
You are seeing the decline first hand game by game IMO

What happened in his personal life?

He had an insane first year and then fell off a cliff

What decline lol. Dude is a fitness freak and his game has never depended on speed. Technical beast.

All he needs to do is take a quick peek before he shoots or passes and he'll be back to normal. He's out of sync. For whatever reason he refuses to look. Shoots and passes with his head down too much this season. That's literally his only flaw this year and he still has time to break this habit he picked up.

I've been critical but he's been fine, he's still an elite 2C.

The perception and expectations for an 11 million dollar #1 overall pick are always going to make it seem like he comes up short (because he is) but he's still very good.

In today's NHL, 60 point players are getting 8 million +. If Tavares was a free agent today, he would probably get a contract for around 8-9 million per year over 4-5 years.

It would be hard to spend 8-9 million per year any better (on the open market).

If you accept him as a slightly overpaid elite 2C that we pay a 2 million per year premium for to get him with zero acquisition cost (we got him for nothing and got a 47 goal season out of him so far) then you will be happier.

Hyman and Dubas and I guess Baba played him so there is some credit to Babcock. But amazing eye for talent by Dubas and Hyman's work ethic brought him to incredible heights, and yeah Babacock played him.

I will laugh so hard if he comes back next year and pots 40 goals and 40+ assists.

The dude will be fine.

He is still easily a 1C in the NHL and other than scoring goals at ES, is meeting or exceeding what he has done for much of his career.

If he was scoring at his career average for ES goals right now, he would be having arguably the second best season of his career behind his first season in Toronto. He hasn't scored this bad at ES since his rookie year, but everywhere else has improved a lot.

I guess people expect him to be as good as Matthews and Marner because he is paid like them, but that is not really how it works. All-in-all, he is making high-end 1C money and is playing like a high-end 1C so...

I don't know the exacts. I thought Babcock was the guy to discover Hyman.

Maybe I am wrong.

Course now. Everyone is probably saying, "it was me". But from my memory, the internet accused Babcock, of all kinds of weird things.

To clarify, I am not a Babcock guy per se. But I think Jack Campbell would give Babcock a tap.

Heck if Jack can do it, so can I.

Havent been this happy as a Leafs fan since the early 90s. I dont care how they're winning as long as they keep doing it.
Every team has a team they struggle with. Its just the Sens for this team, this year.
The Sens are also better than their record this season imo

Leafs are winning a lot and I love it! but this team really has to get their head out of their ass for PPs. They keep panicking with the puck, especially Reilly. Calm the f*** down and you’ll be fine.

Also JT has definitely lost a step this year. Still plays very well overall, but sometimes it’s disappointing, Hyman looks better then him this year :(..on one hand no shame in that, but it’s scary when you think he’s being paid 11 mil!

Ok I'm going to play devils advocate to my own post, lol.

I should point out that the opportunity cost was pretty high with Tavares.

I shouldn't be just using poor players chosen in the open market (i.e Skinner, Hall) to justify the Tavares signing because good players have been signed or traded for relatively cap friendly amounts as well (Trocheck, Pavelski, Kadri).

Tavares+Kerfoot (14.5 million)
vs
Pavelski, Kadri, Trocheck (16.25 million)

I mean, if we want to construct a better roster based on hindsight out of all of the best players chosen and traded for then sure we could do it but there's just no way to know who works out and it isn't really practical to have that type of hit ratio anyways. I'm still happy with J.T (kind of) hope he has a big playoffs, lol.

We're still in a good situation.

My thought is that he also brought a lot to this team in terms of getting us to the level we're at since he's joined the team. His intangibles are worth money too. My guess is that he brings a lot to the room too.

Tavares might have lost a step but he is making it up by playing with determined effort and great intensity every time he is on the ice. His problem to me has been he likes carrying the puck into the enemy zone - trying to go through multiple opposing players in tight spaces, without support, and often losing the puck in the process.
He should learn to distribute the workload to his wingers, by dumping the puck in and let Willy and whoever to earn their livings in the corners and along the boards, while he circles around the net which he is good at.

Congrats on yet another won. Leafs could run the table. They win close games, in the shootout snd barnburners plus Jack Campbell is playing like a Vezina winner.

He hasn't been our coach for a year and a half now. Who cares who discovered Hyman lol

Not really. Hyman basically knocked on the Leafs door and said "Hey guys, I'd like to play for you". And Leafs said "Meh, we'll give up Gregg McKegg and see how it goes...", then Hyman proceeded to beast it up on the forecheck and in the corners, and I think any professional coach would have appreciated what he could do in the NHL from the start.

It was all Hyman tbh. Not Dubas or Keefe or Lou.

Can't help but think there's more there too that will come with more reps and comfortability.

He's been tenacious, good hands and I think once he's back up to speed will start burying more goals

100% agree, he has been a bit snake bitten. Overall really impressed with his tenacity and play. Provided he keeps this up and doesn’t get lazy the TML should look at him as an option for top 6 next year. Hopefully they can dump Kerfoot.

Campbell gave up 1.5 more goals than expected, but the boys don't mind. They picked him up.
