Post-Game Talk: Leafs Win 7-2 against Philly

No, it means people lack an understanding of stats, and that even the best stats require context.

There is no stat, or group of stats, that can be presented that can say that Philadelphia wins THAT game 63% of the time with ANY credibility.

they got absolutely curb stomped in every way possible last night and the result was a 7-2 loss, and it could have been and should have been worse because it could have been and should have been 8-2 because Marner was absolutely pushed into the goaltender.

If they get that PP it might have ended 9-2.

The point is that's arguably the most dominant game they have played this season It's certainly top 3.

There is no chance in hell Philadelphia wins that game 63% of the time it doesn't happen.

Maybe they didn’t even want to win, maybe the Leafs just shut it down after 2 and yes maybe they could have put up 9 if they had to. That’s the problem with expected stats, they don’t take into account circumstances.

To me, there are no excuses. IF they have to beat both TB and FLA, then so be it. If they lose to one of them, I don't wanna hear any excuses. This group just gotta get it done. No crying "oh it's so tough!" none of that. That's already been exhausted.

Yeah, at some point they just have no excuses left and just have to win something, any means necessary. Otherwise, just be dismantled already. When will it ever be an easy 4 round path to the cup? Arguably that was 2021 but see what they did with that?

Ya.. obsessed with the unimportant part of the whole thing... Like I said, people who don't understand stats, will end up dismissing, because they focus on the wrongs things, and don't understand the story of what the important stuff says.

For the record, the 63% stat, means... when the expected goal differential is like that, that 63% of the time, the team will win... not that this particular game, it's actions, or the play represented that probability. There is a nuance there, that perhaps you can understand?

Just shows how irrelevant expected goals and fancy stats are. I particularly like how excuses like lucky bounces/bad bounces etc etc are used to explain away why the fancy stats are so far out to lunch so often

A bit of a Dunning-Kruger effect on this one. People who lack an understanding on Stats and Math, attempting to invalidate it, because they don't understand it.

I mean, I see the posts... and it reads, I don't get it, and that's ok. If this isn't for you, stick to stuff that has meaning to you. Of course when you don't understand math, it's not going to make sense to you. Having taken four years of post secondary stats, I can assure you that there is meaning in this stuff, though it's often not what people are trying to imply.

Maybe in the off season, I can try and explain some of this stuff, so that people can attempt to find greater meaning in it.
