A win is a win is a win.

And while it was a good win for the Leafs I kinda feel Winnipeg's coach owns this one a little. After getting the empty net goal with almost four minutes left he didn't pull Hellebuyck again until the final minute. He should have either left the net empty or pulled him again on every faceoff once Winnipeg had the puck in control going towards the Leafs net.

I mean, let's face it, any time Tavares and Pacioretty have standout performances it probably means the other team didn't play well as opposed to the Leafs playing amazing.

The Good - They won. How awesome is that. I know some people will try to tarnish it by saying Winnipeg was "due" for a loss but that doesn't change the fact the Leafs still won. The Tavares line did pretty awesome too.

The Bad - Letting Winnipeg come back to within one goal. What should have been a blowout became a bit of a nail biter. Nothing would have been more Leafy than seeing Winnipeg tie that game and win it in overtime.

The Ugly - The special teams are putrid. Unless this gets fixed the Leafs chances of winning the cup are nil. Even their chances of making the playoffs with the special teams the way they are is in doubt.

Go Leafs Go!!!

I love Stolarz, sure he didn't have a great game, I'm never going to call 4 goals on 22 shots a great game because it's simply not.

But you know what else he didn't do? he didn't allow the 5th one he didn't allow it to get tied and THAT is why I trust him.

In the past if it had been Samsonov in net that game gets tied, maybe they win it in OT but that game gets tied.

Not Stolarz, he locks it down and locks it in even when he's a little off.

Domi needs someone to pass to in the bottom 6.

Time to cap dump Lil and Kampf. The need for legitimate top 9 forward is greater than the need to aquire assets for Lil.

More than half the options arent good enough to even be considered a poor mans Kerfoot. Not exaggerating.

Holmberg, Kampf, Robertsons zero IQ, surviving off adrenaline game. McMann is pretty good but hes not a 1-2 punch for a line kind of guy. Cant really hate on Lorentz. Hes a good 11-12th forward.

Domi needs a partner whose actually worth 3-5 mil and the forward group will be set. Pacioretty needs to be up with the big boys in our current format as he still sees the game at a high level but is too old to carry our bottom 6 guys. Looks totally lost trying to do stuff on the 3rd line

Other than there PP ( Connor ) , we controlled the game .
Mathews scored like Connor last year.

Great game
JT
Patches
Knies is a stud
Marner
MO finally
Willy

The rest of the team had a really good game.

Stop taking penalties especially dumb ones.

You can see a defensive structure breaking out of our zone alot better than last year. Players see to be in the right spot.

If we had a PP 7 or 8 goals last night

PS the refs sucked again

Prefer the bang for your buck route where you're not actually paying 3-5 mil to get 3-5 mil value, however when the easier, faster and direct route has zero consequences, it should be taken (No offence to those who still believe in Lil). Direct transfer of Lils cap into a trustworthy top 9 forward.

Great win, even if it got really tense at the end.
We showed up right from puck drop, got pucks in deep, forechecked and forced turnovers. When we play this way, we're an extremely tough team to beat.
The Tavares line was excellent and good to see JT have a huge game.
I knew we had done well against Winnipeg recently but had no idea we had been so dominant. These are the scores the past few seasons...

Can they play Winnipeg more often. They’re soft and slow and when their goalie is average they ain’t very good.

It's kind of odd that a team who dominates 5 v 5 is the team who gets 2 times the amount penalties, eh? For some reason, the refs figured the Leafs are suddenly the dirtiest team in the NHL, eh?

Corrupt league and refs.

During last nights game I kinda had the same reaction that the refs were hunting the Leafs. A night to sleep on it and , we probably did everything they said we did, Then my mind goes to why did the Jets not get called, probably because in the 1st and 2nd they were a turnstile, they really just watched the Leafs go Harlem Globetrotters on them. Do the refs have a history of managing the game? Sure. Did the refs call some ticky tacky PIM's, sure. Do I think ref's in general have a hard time calling PIM's for the Leafs advantage, sometimes I do. In all NHL fan bases there is a general thought process that the Leafs are favoured by the League, i think the ref's hear this and dont want to look like they are playing favorites so they let more things go against us and tend to have a lower tolerance for Leaf shenanigans... Bunting is great case study... he was enemy #1 when he was a Leaf and now he is choir boy ... hard not to think there is an anti Leaf bias.

That double minor against the Leafs in the Boston game. There was an ice level replay that shows Pasta knocking Nylander's stick up into his own face. Do players have to have control of their stick? Yes absolutely, but if a player does something like that play, it's no different than a dive to draw a PIM, c'mon now how in god's green earth can anyone say Nylander was at fault, when Pasta provided all the energy to raise that stick into his own face? This is not anything new, Boston has for years played stump the chump with the refs. I'm not suggesting there is a bias for the Bruins, I'm suggesting Marchand, Pasta and some other Bruins are much much smarter than the refs on most nights and can and do easily manipulate the refs.

What a world. Glad I’m not part of it.

My quick takeaways?
Tavares is a borderline #1 centre, definitely should be our #2 centre after Matthews. Needs people to feed him, Patches may be the person, Nylander can be the zone entry guy on the line.
Benoit is sooooo overmatched in the NHL. Timmins is developing during his NHL trial by fire. I would send Benoit to the press box, put McCabe back on the left side, and run Tanev, Lilly, and Timmins on the right side.
Reeves is not even an AHL level player anymore.
Holmberg is a big disappointment. Not an NHL'er.
Domi should NEVER play centre in the NHL, he can't do it.
We need to acquire a good 3rd line centre.
Ideally, we need a great defenceman. They come up from time to time, and we always miss out. Dougie Hamilton has moved a couple of times, and because he likes museums, GM's question whether they want him on their team. He is what we need.
(full disclosure, I like museums too!)

what a great game. I am glad I was too busy to take part in the what is this 2nd line??? discussion in the pre-game thread. I am also glad that Berube didn't bench Holmberg for taking that penalty because it was such a soft call. Connor is such a sick player but you know some of our guys are real f***in good too.

JT FO% 76.2

that's crazy

I think he heard the footsteps, everyone was saying he was cooked after this crappy start. 15 min in a Boston games, kinda tells you that the coach does not think you are part of the solution. Good on him for stepping up.

At this point Benoit is just a place holder for Hakinpaa. Benoit last year was playing to win a roster spot, playing with house money. Now he is playing to not lose his roster spot. Much different mindsets. He needs to free his mind.

Nice to finally get a win again but geez Louise, from all the celebrating in here, you'd think we won the cup or something. I guess winning games against Canadian teams is now like winning the cup for us?

our coach is an idiot. Randy Carlyle level.

There is a reason we are the most hated team in the league
Look at all the leafs jerseys in the crowd. Leafs nation takes over every arena

Put McCabe and Benoit back together they feed off each other

Hakinpaa may be no better then Benoit, albeit on the right side.
I expect a Lilly trade, dumping him for a 7th rounder.
Which is crazy but its coming.

taking silly slashing, tripping calls

It's going to be the story for the Leafs this year, stupid needless PIM's. If Tree is smart he is looking hard for at least 2 elite forward position PK killers, bottom of the line up , low cap hit type players. He is going to need the PK help if he wants to do anything this year.

When healthy Hakinpaa is considered an elite PKer, somethign Benoit is not. Considering all the PIMs we are taking, Hak is what the Dr ordered..

our coach is an idiot. Randy Carlyle level.

Maybe so, he was not my 1st or 2nd choice to replace Keefe.
