Yep, because their first bad week throughout Keefe’s entire tenure as coach (A week which they got .858 SV% goaltending from Andersen and Hutchinson) completely erases their longer stretches of success before it and the core is selfish and overpaid and rotten again. Nevermind the fact Matthews is injured, and Marner, Tavares, and Nylander are still producing. Got it.

Most seasons the Leafs and their big guns come out pretty quick out of the gate and seem to hit a rough patch like this. It’s predictable because this is when the game tightens up and teams start playing that style of game Toronto isn’t well adapted to.

One of the ways is getting guys to the net and just blasting point shots to get tips/deflections or force the opposition in blocking a ton of shots. Also gets the opposition to have to leave the slot to go after the shooting defender. Leafs don't have the best shots from the blue line, especially 1 timers though.

I think Dubas had a genius plan this offseason. Surround the spoiled selfish overpaid core with grizzled veterans that simply won't tolerate their narcissism. And it appeared to be working. And, like you, I thought the reined in core could be something special.

But I fear things have already come back to normal, and will stay this way. Hope I'm wrong.

Please keep this same energy if they win this game.

I don’t think you can out strategize the opponent when your big flaw is having a lower work ethic though. These defenses are broken down by chip and dump and chase and heavy forecheck and a lot of physical play. Good luck getting that out of Toronto.
