This team is lacking a lot more than one forward.

No but he created several scoring chances a game from winning puck battles behind the net and getting it out front. The dirty work nobody else on this team wants to, or is good enough, to do. He is one of the many good players we lost as a cap casualty but its really showing now with him additionally being lost on Matthews line.
