I think that Tavares’ contract is going to prevent the leafs from getting enough talent to back up Matthews/Marner for the next 4 years.

100%. You can't have 3 x 11mil players and have another depth. It's been said time and time again.

It's going to be an albatross of a contract starting next season (if it isn't already)

I can't think of any situation where he'd waive his nmc. He took less money, became a VILLAIN in New York, all to come home.
