It's particularly odd, considering Matthews took the penalty that made it 0-3, putting the game out of reach

His hesitancy to challenge the big guys is really befuddling.
Shanny has prioritized the Core Fore - they are above all other authority. They are coach killers. Sheldon knows this and acts accordingly to keep them placated. I'd do the same. You've seen the Core Fore's attitudes expressed to the media when they've become annoyed with his honest criticism, and Sheldon has had to apologize or backpedal.

I don't make any changes unless Willie and or Bobby Eichel are available. Robertson is out for me... we need all the size we can muster here.

They simply have to play better. The PK was actually good and then it was one detail that wasn't taken care of for each goal. The PP... atrocious. I watch all these other teams in the league with big shots up top, lots of puck and player movement and real net front guys... The PP could have put us right back in the game and failed.

Simply have to have the group play better in game 2.

They will be a LOT better in game 2.

Doesn't mean they'll win the series or even the game, but they do have a tendency to step up when they absolutely have to ... Except in game 7s that is. It's just frustrating that it's the same pattern every year - they can't make it easy on themselves by showing up for game 1 ready to get the win, get the momentum and carry it through.

After all that, I'll say Leafs 5-3. They'll look great early on, take control but then let Bruins back in it. Nail-biter, but a win.
2 years ago, we beat Tampa first game 5-0, then lost the series. Last year, Tampa whooped us 7-3 first game and then we won 3 straight to take the series in 6 games. So who knows what to think. I don't see us going far without Nylander.

Adding pressure to your stars likely isn't the best most at this point

If the Leafs had won yesterdays game, the same doomers would not be saying this is over and a sweep and all of that.

At least let the sample size be bigger than 1 game. If they get dunked on tomorrow, I will begin to have concern.

Oof made the mistake of clicking on the main boards. About exactly as I expected. People are truly obsessed with us.

Is this board really that different right now? haha

People are frustrated with this team's inability to get the job done in the post season. For me the most frustrating thing is that BOS is beatable but seems to be in TOR's players' heads and in Keefe's as well. If this was some expansion team that had no history at all against the Maple Leafs and had the same roster, I feel like TOR would stand a better chance.

It's a bit different. I feel like Leaf fans try to trip over themselves to show they are not homers and a "typical Leafs fan" and end up being haters basically. As soon as they start losing it's like they need to show they never believed in the team.

Main boards is more like *wheeze* Leafs bad. There were a few posters in the GDT saying Matthews was a ghost 5 minutes into the first period last night

He should try anything at this point.

But be fair with the criticism, at least; Domi is there to provide some bite and speed and may take a penalty, call it out if you like. But there's not a peep when Matthews takes a careless high-sticking penalty that leads to a goal.

Just don't say anything then regarding individuals and penalties.

If McMann is back:

If both McMann and Nylander are back:

Bert-AM-Domi

Nylander-Jarnkrok-Marner
Reaves-Kampf-Dewar

Team needs offense .. Matthews' has been his best with Domi and Bert. Tavares was at his best with two young speedy wingers .. Put Nylander and Marner together to try and generate some depth scoring.
Tavares needs to be relegated to 12-14 mins a game

Its the only way this team can be effective

Line 2 & 3

Robertson/McMann - Nylander - Marner
Knies - Tavares - McMann/Robertson

Play

L1 ~21
L2 ~ 19
L3 ~ 13
L4 ~ 7 +/- 2 based on need and play

Domi is mentioned by name because it's with intent, the others are grouped as careless without specifying who. Was there another quote I missed?

"Took the penalty" McAvoy literally stick lifted Matthews stick into his own face. Some of the NHL's rules are really stupid.

I would argue people are more upset with how they are losing. The average leaf fan could tell you exactly what they need to do to have a chance in the series, and what has killed us all season long. Toronto then doubles down and hasn't fixed or adapted to it and it made us lose game 1.

It's a lot easier to generate chances when you can actually absorb the forecheck and break out of your zone, Toronto hasn't been able to do this all season and Boston killed us in game 1 with forechecking and us turning it over.

A lot easier to win a hockey game when you don't lose the PP/PK battle by 2-0. This again has been a problem the entire year. Even IF Toronto tied the PK/PP battle, its a 2-1 hockey game.

WTF is going on with Willy? Is it just me reading too much into this McCabe quote or something went down?

In speaking with multiple sources briefed on the situation, word is that the Toronto Maple Leafs winger wasn’t playing through any significant ailments during a closing stretch of the regular season in which he produced just four points (all assists) in 11 games, finishing shy of the 100-point milestone with 98.

The issue is also said not to have cropped up as the result of some kind of off-ice incident, like a game of two-touch soccer gone wrong or whatever other conspiracy theories might be floating around out there.

Still, there isn’t a whole lot of clarity to be found, either on or off the record, about what did happen.

If he was able to play all 82 regular-season games, including a lengthy shift that bled into the final minute of Wednesday’s finale in Tampa, and there was no off-ice incident, what forced him to sit out Game 1 of the playoffs against the Boston Bruins on Saturday?

Per the sources, he is said to have woken up with an issue that needed attention Thursday morning and remained “pretty stiff” when the series got underway more than 48 hours later. There’s no evidence Nylander even came to TD Garden on game day as he wasn’t spotted walking off either of the team buses in the morning or late afternoon.

Fortunately for the Leafs, there was a Nylander sighting at Warrior Ice Arena on Sunday. He was the first player to take ice — as he’s wont to do — before a 1:30 p.m. skate featuring the Game 1 scratches: Noah Gregor, TJ Brodie, Mark Giordano, Conor Timmins, prospect Cade Webber and goaltenders Martin Jones and Joseph Woll.

That was shortly after teammate Jake McCabe told reporters at the team hotel that Nylander “seemed to be in good spirits today,” but there wasn’t much joy to be found in the work he was doing inside the Bruins practice rink.

Nylander looked to be laboring, especially early in the session, and misfired entirely on a couple of shot attempts while the ice sheet was still freshly resurfaced. He wasn’t moving with his normal fluidity and frequently hunched over while regrouping along the boards between drills. He had Giordano feed him passes to practice one-timers and went through a series of puck-touch drills under the supervision of assistant coaches Manny Malhotra and Dean Chynoweth.

For anyone who doesn't want to read through it, In short, Nylander wasn't playing through anything or got hurt in an off ice activity, he just woke up not feeling great. He felt stiff.
In the skate today, he was laboring, hunched over and missed a couple of easy shots. However he stayed for 56 minutes much longer than his teammates, and skated much better and more like himself as the session went on.
