Overpaid average 4th liner gets traded for a pick, hard not to like it. Dime a dozen player, who was invisible more often than not.

Lmao, that's a pretty solid trade.
McCabe sucks, he's a #4-#5 with no offense.

You basically paid a 1st and 2nd for a bottom 3 D with an appropriate salary for what he's doing. Without the retention he would not have been worth his salary.

Gimme Luke Schenn even at 33 at 2.75 per everyday before McCabe at 4... and maybe even at 2 per.

The next Leafs Report Podcast is going to be filled with tons of salt. Jonas was already in histrionics about Reaves' deal before this deal. His latest article lamenting this trade can't help but bring up Reaves.
Yeah, but he's right. Reaves sucks, and everybody will realize this is Simmonds 2.0 in just a few weeks.

Bertuzzi was a solid signing, Domi as well. They know how to play.

Klingberg/Reaves was a head scratcher.

This will be an interesting season.

Lafferty = more Kyle Dubas purging,

Lots of 5th round picks attached to this acquisition and disposition.

Keep up with the terrible takes, you might get a spot on the Sportsnet panel or the overdrive panel soon enough. McCabe is a great #3, Schenn had a good stretch but he's a bottom pairing D all day long. McCabe had a rough 2nd round, but so did most of the team. He was great for the 3 months prior.

Schenn is a physical bottom pair, that can play with grit and drop the mitts if need be. He's a a proven winner as well. McCabe is about the same, but less the physicality/winning/experience/leadership/fighting.

He should have been brought back instead of a Reaves/Klingberg combo for 5+ millions. Schenn can play 15+ mins and fight. Reaves... can fight. Klingberg, well... You know what I mean. Tyson Barrie 2.0, but older and with his career in a big downslide.

If McCabe was a great #3 he wouldn't be on trash teams everywhere he goes,.he would improve the performance of the team. Also, he is mistake prone and handles the puck like a grenade

Ah yes the Brian Burke hockey intangibles talk lol, looks like you hit the bingo of intangibles. Listing shit like winning, fighting, experience is hilarious. McCabe is a way better defenceman than Schenn, and I wanted to keep Schenn. Don't let a small playoff stretch cloud your judgement, every single gm would take McCabe over Schenn.

Next time don't take the 'throw shit at a wall and hope it sticks' approach, what does he wouldn't be on trash teams everywhere he goes even mean lol? Yea, it's his fault he played on bad teams that means he's a bad player, and he definitely improves our team, what a dumb argument. I can't believe McCabe didn't make the sabres a playoff team lmao.

New season, same terrible takes.

He can't control what team he plays on...Not his fault. And one D can't make those Sabres and Hawks teams good come on..
I mean Ullmark has fantastic #'s on the Sabres last year he was there and they were still the worst team in the NHL.

By "proven winner" you mean the 2 years he was on Tampa where he either was the #6 D in playoff games or was a healthy scratch? If they could win 1 cup without Stamkos I think they'd have won both without Schenn...
I don;'t think Schenn should be playing 15 minutes a night at all.

He's essentially the type of player who'll have more of a role on a lesser team. Here's to hoping that McCabe can thrive in a top four role.

He played 17+ in the playoffs and was probably the most impactful D on this team after Rieilly while McCabe played more but... Well, you watched the same games I did so I guess you already know.

My point was more McCabe @ 2 millions + 3 x 5th for a 1st and a 2nd is not a good trade by any stretch of the imagination if we go by how McCabe played since he was a Leaf.

I mean Edmonton got frickin Ekholm for not much more than that. But yeah he was making too much in salary for the Leafs because Dubas paid the big 4 too much, so he had to go through the garbage bin and pretend McCabe is a top 4 D on a contender.

I just took issue with the idea if a guy wins the cup in such a minor role he's a "Proven Winner",. Schenn played great for the Leafs, BUT at age 34 do we really think that would just continue?

My issue is more trading Sandin than anything. I'd rather have him than McCabe.

Sandin trade was tough, but I kind of agree he is not the kind of D the Leafs needed. Ekholm would have been perfect. Muzzin but twice as good.

Only in Toronto does trading a chump like Lafferty garner so many headlines.

Should we should hold a moment of silence?

I never even heard of this guy before they traded for him. I'll forget about him by this time next week. Lafferty didn't do enough for me to waste another thought on him now that he's gone.

All those intangibles Lafferty brought.

It's gonna be hard for the Leafs to replace him. I'm disappointed he'll no longer be around to weigh the team down anymore. Finding someone more useless to take his place will be difficult.

But I have every faith in this franchise to do so.

Lafferty was pretty good against Florida. Its nice having really fast guys. Hes better than your average 4th liner and it would have been nice to keep him. I think both Reaves and Kampf were overpaid and if they were paid fairly we wouldn't have to be doing these cap maneuvers.

But it's not the end of the world. And I'm glad that McMann was not waived, he should be given time on the 4th line this year

I hope you realize this is astoundingly dumb logic. Hockey isn't Basketball. One player isn't making a team. Erik Karlsson scored 100 points on a dog shit team....he was still one of the best players in the league. Jack Eichel went from the dog shit Sabres to winning a Cup...or did he just get good last year?
