1st period vancouver dominated and andersen was really good and stole it

2nd period was better ans vancouver still the better team but toronto was able to limitate high scoring chance of canucks ( van 2, tor 3). Its a huge difference between this season and last season. Get outplayed but playing a really good defensive game to keep canucks outside of dangerous area and leave with a tie after 40 minutes.

3rd period total domination feom leafs…

Kind of game we lost pretty sure last seasn but because we are stronger defensive side of the puck, lesfs find a way tonstay in the game and won it. Of the 3rd game toronto played over vancouver, this game is my favorite
Not sure why? They looked a bit lethargic and disconnected to start and pulled it out in the third?

I don't understand posts like these. I can see why people dislike the Leafs and this fanbase. Just reeks of arrogance.

It's not much different there, if you go post there right now their salty mods will probably give you a warning. We are instead very well behaved.

The thing is they just have 10% of what our fanbase is so it's less likely to get noticed while we will have 15 people replying to their posts if not 100.

Games like last night are necessary if you are to be a top team in the league.

Played like asscheeks, didn’t deserve to win, but found a way to win.

a huge 12 point swing in our favour.

We have a real chance to extend our lead over Montreal the next two games. We also have a chance to lose it.

This teams killer instinct needs to show up Wednesday

The Leafs played like their were looking ahead to Montreal for the first two periods, then they refocused in the third and just took the game.

I thought Sandin looked good in limited minutes. Stronger on the puck/in the corners than last year. Hopefully that training has helped him out.

Leafs spent a lot of time under Burke getting massively outshot but “finding ways to win”. That’s how we ended up trading 2 firsts and a second for Kessel, because we had a decent record. It’s also the time when corsi gained popularity because it signalled leafs were actually not good, and it was right.

I’m happy we won and obviously we’re better than those Leafs. But this talk that the trademark of an elite team is to get dominated for a game now and then and get some lucky bounces to save their ass is not true. When people talk about an elite team battling finding a way to win, it’s when they are still competing in the game but they aren’t getting bounces and the other team is. Elite teams find ways to get dirty goals and still come out with a win.

Consistency is also the trademark of an elite team.

Hopefully Leafs put this one behind them and are able to find their consistency.

This post sounds like a troll job, but I'll bite.

The Leafs were badly out played in the first two. But coaching and players were able to break through and take control of the remainder of the game.

Outplayed and outshot the Canucks 12-5. And scored 2 beautiful goals.

Lucky bounces? You joking?

They just thought it will be an other walk in the park but vancouver gave a far better competition but whatever a better competition or not, leafs still with a 1-0 lead after one so they just try to protect this lead during second period but they lost their lead

No you're right, not just lucky bounces. Good skilled plays, for sure, from one of the most skilled teams in the league, the plays that happen when you get a break. The types of breaks we find we don't get enough 4 out of 7 games against a playoff team to make up for inconsistent defensive play. To make up for that, we need to play consistent possession hockey, which we didn't do in this game. Which is the essence of my post.

You agree we didn't play well for most of this game. The fact that we got a couple breaks from skilled plays isn't a signal that we've turned a corner, we've had a lot of that for 5 years now. The signal that we've turned a corner is going to be consistent play night-in and night-out, and find ways to win those 4/7 games against playoff teams when we can't find those breaks in defensive coverage, or when a goalie stands on his head against us.

We are a better team than the Canucks. We beat them 3 games straight. Outscored them 15-5. Outplayed played them 7-2 periods. This is not a case of a couple of skilled players saving our asses. It is a case of the team underperforming for those two periods. Coaching mis-planning the 11F 7D approach.

What happened is the exact opposite to what you're saying. It's the Canucks skilled players that tried desperately to make something happen, pushed us hard but in the end the better team won.

Better team won playing with 35% of their foot on the gas. Should tell you something.

If they can win games like this when they dont seem interested for 2 thirds of the game, pretty scary.

We got owned pretty bad by the Canucks for 2 periods and it wasn’t even close. They beat us to every puck. Then it was bang, bang and over.

Andersen was our best player. Thats good.

The Canucks made to many changes and it’s frustrating forbthem right now. Travis Green is no quitter and he’ll have them better soon guaranteed as long as the room doesn’t blow up first. That team isn’t bad. They were playing bad.

I will take the points thankfully and not gloat about it. We have 6 more times to play them. I will bet the next six won’t be easy games

A good third period makes that game far less of a disaster than it could have been. I fully expect that in most games that we're within 0.5xG, our talent wins out. First two periods were pretty yucky though.

That's whats nice about the Leafs. Even when playing bad for majority of the game they can pull out a victory in the blink of an eye with their talent. I fully expected Vancouverr to be far better last night and I thought they would win

They did win. They have that to build on and Green with be pounding on the same drum Keefe had to. Structure,Patience and defensive play first. They opened up just enough for us to squeeze in a play on the Matthews goal and the other one Holtby was frustrated again. They are going to be focusing on defense. They beat us all over and will be doubled down on that style next time. We were the more poised team.

Leafs know this narrative all too well. You cannot leave good teams around when you are dominating the game. Very proud of that 3rd period. It was clear from puck drop that the boys didn't have it going, Freddy stepped up, kept us in it. But major credit to this group for coming out in that 3rd. They saw the opportunity, and they pounced on it. All they had to do was put the prior 2 periods in the rearview and win the 3rd. Which is far easier said than done. They came out with jump, and it snowballed from there. They were the better team in the 3rd period, and deserving or not walked away with the 2pts. That is winning culture. Its a weird feeling to be so happy about a win where they largely got outplayed. But this game really shows the maturation of this group, which is really exciting. This was a game where no one aside from Freddy and maybe Boyd was having any traction. Yet they somehow were still in it, came out in the 3rd and stole it with a collective team effort. Very well done. Its just a weird feeling being on the other end of this storyline

Couple of takeaways from last night's game.

Team looked sloppy first 2 periods and just seemed like they were already thinking of Montreal on Wednesday.

Barabanov shouldn't see the ice again over Engvall and Petan who both have looked better in the opportunities they got.

Sandin looks stronger but unfortunately won't see playing barring an injury since Lehtonen seems to be finding his game and has looked great the last 2 games.

Freddy won us that game last night which is promising considering his sluggish start to the season.

Sweeping the Canucks was as easily predictable as the sun rising and setting each day.

The Leafs toyed with the Canucks like a cat with a mouse would.

Leafs only exerted limited effort and in the 1st X 2 periods they registering only 7 shots on net, while Vancouver was giving it everything they had and the game was tied. Then Leafs put on spurt in the 3rd and scored 2 goals only 11 seconds apart and that was too much for the lowly Canucks to overcome.

Even this early in the season Leafs are already +8 games over .500 while now Vancouver is -4 games below .500 and a +12 game differential and something Vancouver isn't likely to overcome again this season to pass the Leafs in the standings.

After sweeping Van even if the 2 teams split the final 6 games which is a wash the Nucks can not gain ground on Toronto.
