This. I had previously (incorrectly) assumed that it was a NHL or WHL option for him...with him being able to be sent to the AHL, he'll probably have a very high uphill battle to make the team. Alex Nylander, theoretically a really good linemate option.

As for where that leaves the starting lineup... I've personally never been a huge fan of all this "Nylander at C" stuff. Let him be the dynamic winger he's capable of.

Do something like this:

Knies-Matthews-Domi
McMann-Tavares-Marner
Pacioretty-Holmberg-Nylander
Jarnkrok-Kampf-Cowan

If you are keeping Cowan around, that deployment just feels like a total waste to me. I’m also not sold on Holmberg as 3c at all unless he takes a big step this year.

Lots of lists have Jarnkrok absent. I think Berube will be a fan of his. Trading him would free up cap space but if he isn't traded, he is definitely playing

Not sure if Nylander sticks at C as well. Wonder if Berube will put Willy in the dog house with his inconsistent back checking

Berube says Nylander will start at center with Domi on his wing.

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Domi-Nylander-Pacioretty
McMann-Tavares-Robertson
Holmberg-Kampf-Reaves

Knies-Matthews-Pacioretty - Selke level center
Domi-Nylander-marner - Selke level winger
McMann-Tavares-Robertson - 2/3 heavy line
Holmberg-Kampf-Jarnkrok - everything but offense line

The team should prepare for the post Marner era.

Focus on D and low event hockey. Running 3 equal lines with JT and Marner on line 3 is what I'd do.

If we need more goals / might miss the playoffs, then I'd try Marner higher up in the line up.

That's not good idea. Nylander switching over to play center seems like to late in his career to try this.

I could see this at the beginning of season if Pacioretty makes the team. Don't know if he'll be able to keep up the 1st line minutes though given his injury history

So, sounds like heavy is better;

Grebenkin - 210 - camp weight
Holmberg - 201 - camp weight
McMann - 215 - camp weight
A.Nylanber - 205 - camp weight
Pacioretty - 217 - hockeydb weight and camp weight

Do these players make the team bigger over last year?
Some new some just bigger.

Paciorrety Matthews Domi
Robertson Tavares Marner
A. Nylander W. Nylander Cowan
McMann Holmberg Knies

Reilly Tanev
OEL McCabe
Benoit Liljegren
Hakanpaa

Woll Stolarz

Paciorrety a big body can pass or score, Domi is solid & plays a heavy game, more of a playmaker than passer. Domi & Patch will create more space for Matthews.

We already know Tavares & Marner works ( 47 goals career best for Tavares season he played with Mariner ) which will bring Tavares goal total up. Tavares also a sniper not quite a Matthews but he will score 40 + playing with Marner. Leafs need Tavares to be the best sniper he can be, that would be with Mariner.

One would assume some chemistry between the Nylander brothers, Cowan has many attributes also strong on the PK or PP he is a playmaker that can score. Let him play the season & by the playoffs you will be happy you did.

4th line a heavy line with a some size & skill some goal scoring from Knies & McMann and somewhat Holmberg. This line designed to play heavy, hit & wear down the opposition.

Reaves, Dewar, Gregor could see some games on the 4th line.

The top 3 lines just let them play, they'll figure it out.

No more Kampf

Or

Paciorrety Matthews Cowan
Robertson Tavares Marner
A. Nylander W. Nylander Holmberg
McMann Domi Knies

* 4 Line would play that much heavier with Domi also a good puck distributor benefitting the scoring attributes of two effective wingers like McMann & Knies. That would really suck for the opposition lol. If it is about winning not equating your salary to the line you should play on, Leafs could have 4 awesome lines with grit, speed, skill, size, etc. Holmberg sound defensively which benefits both Nylander's both highly skilled.

Cowan, A. Nylander & Paciorrety if given the opportunity should shine if they remain healthy.

The 1st line of Knies-Matthews-Domi was great last year. I can guarantee you they're not putting 2 of them on the 4th line.

Any player making a double digit AAV / salary should be on and able to carry their own line at that cap investment.

4 players = 4 separate lines.

Anyone doubling up should be in for a paycut on their next contract,

XXXX --- Matthews --- XXXX
XXXX --- Nylander ---- XXXX
XXXX --- Tavares ------ XXXX
XXXX --- XXXX --------Marner

Solve for XXXX on each line & "PLay the Kids" ..

Absolutely love it.

Will never happen.

So my modified version is JT and Marner on third line and run 3 equal lines.

Not sure how I like Nylander and Domi together, both defensive liabilities to a certain degree. I guess we’ll see how it goes though!

Nylander should have taken less because he got his contract by playing with a double digit AAV player, Tavares got him that contract.

Draisaitl should have gotten less too.

"Games aren't played on paper, bunch of nerds"... proceeds to use numbers instead of players to form lineups... so many people do that on this board.

Do you seriously think Tavares will turn back time to repeat his best ever season, which was six years ago when he was playing 1C? Least year he managed only 29 goals, and only 65 points while playing with one of the best wingers in the league, who ended up with 40 goals and 98 points. For perspective, JT has fewer assists than Willy had goals, while Willy had twice as many assists as JT had goals. JT hit 40 once, six years ago, while Willy has done it the past two years in a row.

It looks like the preseason will start with Marner with Matthews, Domi with Nylander, and JT at 3C.

I like the idea, but I don't think either JT (any more) or Marner can carry a line by themselves, and Mitch would be wasted on a checking line.

Ignore the overpayment - Domi and Marner should be the RWs on the top two lines. At worst put Marner with JT on the third line for defensive help.

Nylander should have received more because he got his contract despite playing with a fading player, Tavares cost him that contract.

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Domi-Nylander-Pacioretty
McMann-Tavares-Robertson
Holmberg-Kampf-Reaves

Domi is a RW and Pacioretty a LW and you're also missing Jarnkrok. More or less what I expect though. I could see Knies with Nylander and Domi for balance while Pacioretty moves up to play with Matthews. The fourth line with Jarnkrok instead of Reaves will be interesting.

McMann - Matthews - Marner
Knies - Nylander - Domi
Pacioretty/Cowan - Tavares - Robertson
Holmberg/Dewar - Kampf - Jarnkrok

Really think McMann can be hyman-esque this year, while Knies more defensively aware to support Nylander/Domi
