Three stars
Mathews
Stolarz
Palat

I really don’t know what game the selectors were watching but…
That seems to be quite common - the three stars based on the scoresheet rather than the game.

Game ends in OT: 1st star = gwg
Low scoring (no shutout): 2nd star = winning goalie
Close score (especially goes to OT): 3rd star = most goals by losing team.

If Stolarz has a shutout or if we won in regulation (say 3-1) and he faced 40+ shots, maybe he's 1st.

Pathetic, but that seems to be part of the formula they apply. You have to feel sorry for whoever did it - they obviously missed one hell of a goaltending performance.

We were definitely lucky to come out of this game with 2 points but that felt a lot like many games we saw from the other side while Keefe was our coach. Especially the Panthers series.

The Devils held the pace of play and out shot and out chanced us. Heavily.
But they also gave up multiple high danger chances like Matthews getting 4 breakaways. And damn they had absolutely no response to their best player getting obliterated.

The rest of this month the leafs play mostly terrible teams. They will score lots of goals and pad their stats. None of it will mean anything. The next 55 games or so are just glorified practices.

February, we have but one home game. If we survive that, we should be in pretty good shape.

If we're going to compete for top spots this season, we have to get a 3rd line going. It's likely we will need to make a trade for a quality 3rd liner, but still possible when everyone's healthy we will have enough quality on that line.

Huge character win.
We got dummied for alot of that game but Stolarz kept us in it.
Matthews had a great game and could have easily had three goals and not many players can finish that play in OT.
Holmberg has gotten tons of criticism but one thing is he's consistently been working his ass off and showing tons of heart.
Dewar also deserves tons of props for winning that puck battle that lead to Holmbergs goal.
Yeah holmberg works but it isn’t good enough goal aside

Damn was Stolarz good, the guy is massive and when he's in net he covers a lot of area

That was greasy, but we bagged 2 points and found a way to win (somehow)

That's hockey and it's not as if it hasn't happened to us over the years

On to the next one

Markstrom’s game tonight reminded me of Samsonov last year. Soft goal after facing very few shots; eventually taking a loss.

NJ was lucky that Matthew’s game is still a bit off (post injury) because he could have had a hattrick tonight.

What a pathetic game! Well I hope it’s not rinse and repeat like every other year it’s been like every other year. Absolutely dog shit.

Patches really wants the cup before he retires I guess. Much respect to him compared to freakin marleau, Jumbo and to an extent spezza

No way, Spezza gave his all for this team and accepted league minimum to do it. I still can't believe Jason-freaking-Spezza is one of my favourite Leafs ever now and Patches is climbing that ladder as well (a Sen and a Hab - crazy world). Berube sure seems to like him.

The only way this Elite thing of yours is gonna truly gain ground, is if you keep making acronyms when they're definitely not elite, like you did here tonite...! haha.. I love it

Every time I see these posts all I can think of is Father Charles goes down and ends battle/Battle ends and down goes Father Charles as well as every good boy deserves fudge. I don't even know what those mean anymore but they're in the fish brain still for some reason.

Berube seems to be biting his tongue a bit, but each interview seems to be having similar frustrations with this team as Keefe. After the Washington game Berube indicated players were going backwards with the puck too much and have been getting into old habits for a few games, instead of playing North. When a reporter asked if he liked the way Marner scored vs Pitts (the rebound goal while screening the goalie), Berube smiled and said "I like greasy goals". He continurd by saying the coaches have been telling the 2 in front of the net at all times. He also said they've been preaching to the players that fancy goals dont happen in playoffs and that they need to be able to score greasy goals.

Even Tanev seems to not be pleased with the efforts of the forwards, both Berube and Tanev talked about the lack of forechecking and taking the body after todays game. Tanev, whose obviously to the point in his interviews, has indicated in past postgame interviews that the team wasnt playing the coaches way (hard forechecking, north hockey etc).

This is obviously all primarily directed to Matthews, Nylander, Marner and Tavares. I dont think Tavares is the problem, hes always in front of the net and I believe led the leage in slot shots last year.

Yes we are winning, but its interesting to see that Berube seems to be having a bit of a challenge getting the "core" to buy into a playoff style, much the same as Keefe did.
