Joseph Woll's 'big night' puts happy spin on ugly Maple Leafs performance - Sportsnet.ca

BUFFALO — When the Toronto Maple Leafs had fumbled away their second two-goal lead of the night, when the Buffalo Sabres smelled a choke job and were storming the gates late, that is when Joseph Woll felt most at ease in his hectic NHL debut.

“Goalie is a pretty unique position. You can almost feel like you’re on an island,” the thoughtful 23-year-old netminder said between salvaging his first win and gifting the game puck to his mother, Shelley.

“But I think [the key is] having the right mindset of being in the moment, keeping your confidence and not being afraid to make mistakes. You have to go through a little adversity to develop. At least I did.”

Lanky and likeable, Woll was talking big picture: about a journey that took him from Boston College blue-chipper, through an uneven Marlies experience rocked by a pandemic and those harsh pro lessons, to an evening where a brigade of Woll’s family helped increase attendance at a Sabres game to 7,992.

But the goalie could’ve been talking more specifically about how he handled the Sabres knotting his debut at 4-4 late and nearly turning his dream into a nightmare.

“To be honest, that was probably the calmest I felt the whole game. Just go out and play,” Woll smiled.

“I think a lot of times you can try to predict the future or catastrophize what can happen there, but at that point I said to myself, ‘Just enjoy being out there with this group.’ Pretty special outcome.”

A dramatic 5-4 victory on a back-to-back and a souvenir for Shelley will gloss over what Woll’s coach believed, in general, to be a burn-the-tape performance by the skaters in front of him.

"The first two periods were dreadful,” said Keefe, sounding like a man sensing a slip. “For us to get [the win], regardless of how we got it, I’m happy for him and his family. It’s a big night for him.”

This core has had 5 post-seasons to figure it out, and they haven't... if the light switch hasn't gone on yet, I doubt it ever will. This is why it's imperative our depth players step up in the post season, because Lord knows our core players will fall to pieces per usual.

Quite frankly except Nylander and to a certain extent JT the core 4 hasn’t had a goo start.

So am banking on the hope that they will turn it on in the playoffs

I didn't really follow the game-day thread. Can someone explaing this "F off Muzz" thing? What was this about? Did you see him saying it on the bench? Did you hear it?

I imagine with Nylander, Keefe told him not to do a specific thing and once he did it again, likely on the 4th goal, he sat him.
No biggie.

The beard has lots of aerodynamic drag, and now that he's a senior citizen, his spindly little legs can't overcome it.

(D0 I have to say this is sarcasm).
Ya becareful what you say some people will take your comment to heart here ;) Especially other fans who have beards they may feel insulted and we will here a protest on CP24, right after the gay lives, black lives and native American lives matter press conferences.

Rielly's goal was a beautiful fluke. It was total luck to have the puck pop up on its edge right on the sweet part of Rielly's stick then to have it hit the ice and spin forward. Calgary's only goal on Friday night had the same kind of fluke where the puck popped up on its edge at the last moment allowing the Calgary player to raise it over Campbell's pad so tight.

We always typically point fingers at other teams we face how certain things they do are lucky or a fluke so its nice to see it happen for us.

You have absolutely no idea why he was benched yet, it could have been since he is not the greatest defensively they were worried about getting at least one point since they could basically do nothing right tonight. I bet he would have played OT if they got there.
You're hoping.....there does appear to be some personal bias. Nylander is a game breaker and best player to date...dosen't deserved an extended benching

Keefe coaches Nylander down in the A. He knows what he can and can’t handle. Keefe loves the guy and knows what he’s capable of. He calls him out because he knows what kind of response Nylander will give him on the ice….. I really don’t think Matthews and Marner would handle a benching or criticism in a positive way tbh.

Comments on the game:
- really ugly win but that is how you eventually qualify for the playoffs winning games on off nights
- Woll is not good handling the puck, that's going to be a roadblock to the NHL for Woll, notice how almost no quality NHL goalie in 2021 has chronic puck handling issues
- Ritchie didn't look too bad and should have scored in this game a couple times, there may still be hope
- you hope otherwise but it's pretty clear that Semyonov is replacement level, nothing wrong with his effort and such but he's just getting his promised opportunity

I hope nobody piles on the kid for giving up 4. The first...lucky bounce. 2nd...yeah that was on him. 3rd...all on Dermott losing the puck. And the 4th started with a stupid up the middle clearing pass by Muzzin (who should never be paired with Holl again. Both horrendous) and ended with Woll playing with Marners stick. I don't blame him on that goal one bit.
They are and they will. Between his numbers in the AHL and the Sparks PTSD, part of this fanbase didn't want to give him a chance before his start and also don't want to either after one game.
