This says to me that BT isn't convinced about Woll being an NHL goalie.

For a goalie to be lost on waivers at season's start requires other teams to have injuries and worse options. Chances are that Jones passes through waivers.

Hasn't everyone told us that goalies are voodoo? Maybe this goalie reverts to his form of 5 year's ago.
Or It says that Treliving knows that goalies get injured, and he'd prefer to have an experienced third stringer to call up if needed.

Chances are actually he doesn't pass through waivers.

Leafs have lost Calvin Pickard and Curtis McElhinney in the same preseason to waivers.
We even lost goalie Harry friggin Sateri last year whoever that is...

Some of you are hilarious with your talk of Woll battling at camp for the #2 job, when he will clearly be fighting Samsonov for the starters job.
Though I like your moxie and I believe the backup/1B job is slated for Woll, I'm thinking the bet is Sammy's even though I think he sucked in the playoffs. Reason being, I think he was battling injuries.
That said, I love what Woll has done. If he took another step this off season as he did last off season, no question he will be a serious contender for the starter job

He's an insurance policy

Woll is young and inexperienced and Samsonov doesn't have a huge track record of success either
Both guys have had the odd injury issue as well

Getting a decent 3rd stringer to back them up just seems like the prudent option

Samsonov will undoubtedly be the starter unfortunately. But I just hope Woll is the playoff game 1 starter

I was very critical on samsonov's playoff performance, it sucked Imo. But I do believe he was fighting injury.
If he's healthy and Woll is healthy, we are in a great position.
My personal thoughts are, Woll is a stud. I think he's figured it out, and if he has, we have some good goaltending for years coming.
If samsonov has figured it out, we Re in for good goaltending for years.
If they both show they are only good for 40ish game, run the platoon.
Bottom line, if both are studs, my personal thought is Woll would be the choice we should take, but that's heavily biased because I've been cheering for him since we drafted him and that was tough because he didn't figure it out until ladt year

No, like 5.28 GAA, 0.828 SV percentage ugly. I think he's got some potential, but he's just not close to ready. Like not even close. Give the kid a break and let him develop.

2 game sample sizes? Come on...

That's like saying Jones should be our goalie in the playoffs since he has a 1.00 save % last year.

You don't want to throw a kid to the wolves as your first alternative.

4th string goalies have gotten PT in the last 3 years, having Hildeby as your 3rd string with a rookie in Woll as #2 would be fireable offence for a GM to leave the goalie cupboard that bare.

At what age can you throw them in?

Hildeby still may be our #3, Jones may not clear waivers.

They still might if Hildeby plays wells .. it's just a depth move, nothing to complain about

I am not complaining, I think it is a good move. I just would rather the kids play if we are calling someone up. And I don't want them being blocked in the AHL.

It’s obviously more about who made the signing than the signing itself.

Jones is a borderline NHLer, if he passes through waivers, good, it is depth. I just want the kids to play too and not be blocked too much, that's all.

Nothing to do with who signed him. I think it is good signing, just a little disappointed he is probably blocking a prospect from playing as the starter.

I watched parts of both games. He was out of his element, badly. Yes, the stats were bad, but the kid just isn't ready. No harm in that, he's 21, it takes time to develop a goalie.

You'd really prefer a kid, who might not be AHL ready yet, to be relied on, in case our two top goalies get injured? Like really? He'll get his chance, he's not blocked, he's not even ready.. .he might need to start in the ECHL.

It's not like saying blah blah about Jones at all. He's young for a goalie, he's not been ready, and there is no indication he will be. You absolutely need that insurance that Jones provides. If somehow Hildebeast makes great strides this year, and shows he's ready... he'll get a chance. But you can't bet on a kid, who hasn't shown to be ready, or close to it.

So we are going to send Hildeby to a lower league than SHL? Makes no sense, just send him back to the SHL.

Goalies need time to adjust to the angles of NA ice, I've heard them talk about it before.

Jones should probably be an AHLer, I don't see a significant difference between Jones and one of our goalies, we are going to struggle if both our goalies get injured regardless.

I am assuming Hildeby will be loaned out to the SHL if Jones clears. He might even be under contract already, in which case this convo is pointless.

It's insane you think 2 games with minimal practice is a fair representation of him.

Why can't Hildeby be #3? Why does he need experience? I don't look at it any differently than a good goalie being brought over to the NHL from the SHL.

Hildeby is better than Kallgren and we gave him NHL games as the #3.
Hildeby can have a chance. All he hast to do is out perform the other guys in the AHL. If Jones is as bad as everyone is saying that shouldn’t be very hard.

Great depth signing. Hopefully he can squeeze through waivers.
Experience.

Jones has posted a 32-27 record alongside a 2.36 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage in 63 career playoff games.

Jones also won the Stanley Cup with Los Angeles in 2014.

Internationally, Jones captured a gold medal with Canada at the IIHF World Championship in 2015 and also helped Canada win a silver medal at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Just in case anyone was wondering who won more NHL regular season games last year Samsonov or Martin Jones, the answer is neither, as they both tied for 11th among goalies with 27 wins each.

I would say even if Jones is available they will make surer Hildeby is developing, not a backup. Jones is there to take some heat off Hilly if he struggles and also spot start in the NHL rather than exposing Hilly before he's ready. I am fine with the move.

Leafs now has $5.191 mil cap invested in 3 goalies for next season and may actually carry 3 goalies on their 23 man roster with 1 spare forward & 1 spare dman and 1 spare goalie.

The real question now will be whether or not Jones will clear waivers or if the Leafs plan to roll with 3 goalies on their 20-23 man roster.

Lots of Hildeby in this thread.
I think it is a flip of a coin at this point who between Hildeby, Peksa or Petruzzelli will be the best pro.

Of those 3 Petruzzelli was easily the highest draft pick.
