Also I'm not sure on Reaves post career aspirations, but playing for the Leafs greatly opens up options for opportunities within the media. I wouldn't be shocked if he pursued a post playing career on tv. This could be as much about personality exposure for further down the line as it is hockey.

- I'm 41, so I don't remember 1979.
- That was a midseason move that contributed very little to how bleak the subsequent offseason was.

I stand by what I said, this is the bleakest offseason I can remember.
Okay, so you don't remember 1979, but: then again
"That was a midseason move that contributed very little to how bleak the subsequent offseason was."
Losing Lanny who went on to Captain the Fames to a cup, was moronic, it was a big reason the Leafs went from a Cup contender in the late 70's to a pretender.

Signing Reaves is meaningless, unless the core is changed.

Look. By July 1979 everyone had shed all their tears and had come to grips with the fact that Lanny was mistreated and traded. That was a shitty midseason and I'm taking about shitty offseasons.

And yes, I know it's meaningless if bigger changes don't happen, but this is just another piece of news this week that indicates those changes aren't coming. This is what I'm talking about and IT'S EXACTLY WHY THIS OFFSEASON IS SO BLEAK.

We need big, fundamental changes and instead Treliving is tinkering around the edges, like Dubas used to, except in awful, ham-fisted ways.

Hopefully it’ll be under 1.5 so it won’t matter much I just hope he isn’t playing more than 4th line minutes if he doesn’t impress.

So far coming off a playoff run where we averaged 2 goals in our final seven games, were shredded by Florida on the rush (80% of their 5v5 goals came on the rush) the Leafs have opted to:

1) Overpay for David Kampf, noted offensive black hole

2) Target a 6'4 dman who can't skate with one of their three draft picks

3) Play hardball with William Nylander in contract negotiations, the only player on the team who consistently puts up numbers in the playoffs

4) Sign 36 year old 4th line winger Ryan Reaves to a multi-year deal. The same Ryan Reaves who has been healthy scratched in the playoffs with Vegas and the Rangers during their recent deep runs.

We really became the dumbest front office in the league overnight.

And walked O’Reilly and Schenn to free agency

I don’t mind the Reaves signing but the Kampf over pay stings.

Early days but not the best start here

This only works if he signs the Simmonds contract, and, if like Simmonds, he handles himself like a complete pro when juggled in and out of the lineup. I don't know how realistic either of those are

Pagnotta is a pretty reliable source.

And correct me if I'm wrong, but, Reaves is over 35, so this will likely be a "35+" contract. Meaning, that if he retires at any point during the contract, it will still count against the cap.

Dear God. This better be for no more 1 mil per if it's true.

Came here to say the same. At most 2 by $1M or less. Anything else, no thank you.

We would've been significantly better off with a repentant version of Dubas who realized that what we've tried for the last 5 years isn't working, and then went about overhauling it. Shanny threw the baby out with the bathwater and this is what we get.
Dubas left for power, as a free agent, lying on his way out the door using his family for cover and sympathy.

We are going to be a much worse team next year. Just feel it in the bones. Our front office has gone from average to straight up bad. Joy.
The amount of idiots here who celebrated Treliving as a clear upgrade over Dubas when he:

- Never made the playoffs more than 2 seasons in a row with Calgary
- Overpaid for: James Neal, Michael Frolik, Troy Brouwer,
- Opted to bridge Matthew Tkachuk over signing him to a long term deal
- GM'd a team that never made it past the 2nd round in twice the amount of time that Dubas was GM of the Leafs.

Dumbest fanbase in the league, dumbest fan community, dumbest hockey forum.

Well watching your no 1 prospect and second line winger get molested and concussed with no rebuttal would cause any good gm to make sure your opponents at least fear u would do something .
Bennett perry Tkachuk and gudas pretty much were the biggest swinging dicks in the second round party

Yeah I mean I would agree, I think it is probably just as important that the person you are bringing in to make sure that doesn't happen can actually be on the ice when those things are happening. Also when you look at the good teams in the playoffs....the best players on the team stick up for the other guys. Look at Stamkos dragging Matthews after Rielly blew up Point. Reaves is never going to be on the ice with Marner and Matthews. At some point Marner and Matthews balls have to drop and they realize that playing mean and being an ass hole in the playoffs is what is required....can bring in as many 4th line goons as possible but if that doesn't change nothing will.
