Confirmed with Link: Leafs sign D Simon Benoit (1 year, $775k)

Well, no shit. He's in a defensive role and starts 60% in Dzone.

Carlo, for example, is about 50% and comparatively, his numbers are worse.

4th most D zone starts, and he has the worst numbers, Carlo doesn't...

Ironic, for someone named "notbias"

But to fair, I'm not the biggest Treliving guy either, but the utter simplification and lack of context is certainly a choice.

Posting facts hurts people's feelings, it is crazy.

Benoit is 2nd best on the team in GA/60 (best for xGA/60). He is last in offensive zone starts and the team is shooting 6.7% when he's on the ice (dead last among D, next closest is 9.9%), so that's why Leafs aren't scoring many goals when he's on the ice.

He's doing a great job as a #6 D making peanuts.

O zone and D zone starts are so overblown when he starts 75% of the his shifts on the fly...

His underlying stats are bad, and so are his real stats, there are two sides of the ice.

pretty sure he played more than all d-men last night in a shutout win

That is very neat.

Over a larger sample size, he has played the least of any D over the entire playoffs.

He also had the worst stats of any D on the team last night.

That is not to say he was bad last night.

So he does help the team win. Played the most minutes in a dominant defensive showing

What are your thoughts on this tweet?

(dawg is projected output vs. actual)

That means he is playing better than expected, not that he is playing great. His NetRtg is still tied with Carlo at -0.3 at worst on the team for D. The "DDawg" thing just means Dom expected him to be worse. For the most part, I agree with that.

Also you'll note that there are 6 forwards with equivalent or worse ratings.

His defensive rating looks decent but he's being brought down by a poor offensive rating.

How is that offensive rating calculated? Is On Ice shooting perecentage something that is factored in?

I see the Benoit - OEL pairing only has a On ice shooting percentage of 7.9% while the other pairings are around 12-14%.

I think in the regular season their number was 14%.

I'm guessing it's based mostly on scoring chances/expected goals because Laughton/Lorentz/Jarnkrok/McMann are all around the same number whereas their actual 5v5 GF vary quite a lot more (Jarnkrok, for example, has only been on for one GF in nearly 120 5v5 minutes, which is abysmal).

Usage goes both ways. Benoit gets more d-zone than o-zone starts, sure, because he doesn't create offense, but he's also mostly playing with lines 3&4 who aren't scoring. Jarnkrok & Laughton have had chances but not finished. I think the stats are mostly fair in that they're spending a lot of time hemmed in their own zone, and not finishing because... they're not very good. Case in point, Benoit snuck off the point and got a shot in close... last game or the game before? but put it well wide. So when people say it's encouraging that he's skating with the puck more, yeah, it can be if it leads to a goal (and not a break against), but if you're not converting, well...

Consider OEL-Benoit have played 143 mins 5v5, 3GF 5GA for 37.5% GF%, 40.6% xGF. OEL has also played 66 5v5 minutes with other partners, mostly Rielly, and has 5GF 1GA in that time (3.64xGF, 2.93xGA). But of course OEL-Rielly are likely to be playing with one of the top 2 lines while pressing for a goal, not taking garbage time minutes with checking lines.

He played the most minutes in an elimination game where the Leafs had a shutout.

You really think you're fooling anyone with your nonsense?
Tanev is one dimensional. Carlo is another Holl. OEL is too old. Benoit is a bum. See a trend? It's so pathetic.
