Knew it wouldn't be long before the "come around" posts began on OEL.

Always had faith he'd be a positive addition. Dude is instantly our 3rd best D. He was a captain of a NHL-like team for years as a young player. Had a couple of injury plagued years on a questionable Canucks team that probably weren't the norm with this guy. Really excited for this version of the team, especially seeing what Berube can do with the D.

Agreed. I was low key hoping we got a gem there and Stolarz is also a candidate for a breakout in net.

Why are people impressed with his offence.

NOT TO MENTION: he gets burned alot pinching.

he scores once every 10 games.

none in the last playoffs. Skates like a Dad now.
Only 108 is the total amount of defenseman with over 100 goals. Seems he's going to be in the top 100 goals scoring defensemen of all time.
Want to see a silly drop off in defensemen scoring Paul Coffee missed 400 by like 1. But his last few years was only a handful. But you may or may not go check him out.
So anyways show us an example of a good active scoring defensemen and I'm sure Reilly is on or around the same pace over there careers. Which probably will only you will only able to pick from about the top 3 scorers to beat his stats by a wide margin.

We havent had a number of former all star 1d level defenders do it as a part of an upswing/ potential partial return to form after a season destroyed by injury.
That's making a distinction based on your perception of what he used to be and a hope that he's going to get back there in his mid-30s; not a distinction in the actual act being used to promote that idea. I don't think it's enough to make the assumption that it represents some big OEL resurgence, especially since he was dropped down when the two players came back, and then dropped below Mikkola to the bottom pairing, and then dropped even lower in minutes in the playoffs. He looks decent so far, so I guess that's what we should focus on. Hopefully he keeps it up.
Leafs have not had a defender do that on a Cup winning team since since expansion.
Neither did Florida. They won the cup with him on the bottom pairing.

He earned his cheque imo until the latter half of the 2022/2023 season, it was all downhill from there…….
I feel like he's not the one to worry about. Tanev if anyone.

On the strange but true side of things. OLE it would be a great example of somebody who scored a lot in 3 years like 59 goals. He has 144 goals. He might be one of the highest recorded defensemen active in the NHL right now.
All right, we're talking about Morgan Riley. Same amount of points.

OEL is like a different player form the rest of his career, in a good way.
So different from his Vancouver days, better even then with the Panthers.
A surprisingly good sign.

I mean he was like a top 10 defensemen in the league for a few years with Arizona lol
A #1 D-men with the coyotes
Bought out by Vancouver
A #4/#5 on a cup winning team with Florida

Not sure what he is but he looks like at least an elite bottom pair or good 2nd pair.

Consistency will be the big thing for him.

I’ll take a good #4/5 at 3.5 every day of the week.

Revisit a nice article on how the coyotes mgmt stated they wouldn’t trade OEL for a draft pick (Mathews), funny how it mentions they have up and Coming Max Domi in the organization.
Even funnier how 8 years later we have all 3. lol!

a Coyotes general manager Don Maloney has said he will not trade star defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson for a chance to draft projected No. 1 pick Auston Matthews should the Coyotes not win the draft lottery.

Maloney was speaking to about 150 fans at a forum on Saturday, when conversation turned to the prospect of moving his most valuable player, the 24-year-old Ekman-Larsson in order to move up and nab Matthews.

“That will never happen,” said Maloney, according to azcentral.com.

The thought of the Coyotes doing whatever it takes to land Matthews, who grew up in Arizona, makes some sense.

Matthews would give the Coyotes a franchise centre, and also a hugely marketable asset given his roots in the community. The team, while nearing a deal to share an arena with Arizona State University in a much more favourable location than the suburb of Glendale – where they currently play – hasn’t always thrived financially.

President, CEO and co-owner of the Coyotes Anthony LeBlanc shot down any suggestion that his team would be willing to part with Ekman-Larsson, who’s sixth in scoring among NHL defencemen this year with 20 goals and 31 assists in 69 games.

“I think I spit my coffee out,” said LeBlanc. “Would we on the business side love having a kid who started playing hockey because he went to a Coyotes game? … Of course.”

“(But) we’re not trading Oliver for a draft pick.”

Not being willing to give up their No. 1 defenceman does not mean the Coyotes would be unable to make an enticing offer for the team that wins the draft lottery.

The Coyotes have young up-and-coming players in Max Domi and Anthony Duclair, while last year’s third-overall pick Dylan Strome has put together another excellent season in the Ontario Hockey League, leading the Erie Otters with 111 points (37 goals, 74 assists) in 56 games

Prime OEL is unquestionably the best defenseman we would have had in a leafs uniform since I don’t even know. Leetch?

Of course we don’t have prime OEL. Hopefully we have a solid 4th D.

The guy played 15 minutes a night on the best defensive team in hockey last year.

He's been a great add and no it isn't too early to say, he's played a 1000 games for a reason. Nice work Tre. This looks the best D core of this era.

The leafs D is barely competent now but it says more about how it was neglected for the past 20 years since the Quinn era than it does about how it might stack up against a Stanley cup championship d core.

No question Tre has improved the defence and goaltending.

No. He basically the same as he was earlier. Just getting more opportunities with less competition around him.

Only 3 games but he's proving me real wrong. He keeps up this play and I'll forget all about Roy and Skjei.
And we could still acquire a player like Roy or Skjei, or even better, by trading Liljegren plus additional assets in addition to getting OEL. If Calgary commits to a full rebuild, we could potentially trade Cowan and Liljegren for another top-pair defenseman like Rasmus Andersson.

This could create a top-five defensive core in the league:

- Rielly — Tanev
- McCabe — Andersson
- OEL — Hakanpaa
