The level of work ethic just is not there from earlier. Guys are not hitting, I remember Matthews even hitting guys. Now we're back to soft, no detail, poke check and skate-off hockey. There's no compete. Maybe it's the fatigue or a rough patch in the season, but this is not the same team from earlier.

This is the book on the Leafs and it will continue to be the book until the stars (and others) play back. Skill is tough to obtain, but no star scores every night. Strong forechecking players show up every night. It's how they stay in the league.

The talent only works when it feels like it, hence why games like this you see the Bogosians and Hymans as our best players. I hate this piece of shit team so often because of all the primadonna pushovers we have.

The Leafs don’t really seem to value the abrasive competitor personality trait when identifying talent. They fall in love too easily with high end finesse practice skills and slot those onto support lines. Sometimes it works and other times you don’t have the grit to claw and battle when things aren’t going well.

Islanders don't have the offensive talent we have but they have a ton of character and heart. They know what it takes to win and are hungry to win. Team plays as one whole unit, defence first and then the offense will come.

I personally think it's lazy analysis when people try to claim this team lacks heart. We have no shortage of examples of this team showing heart.
No team's have it all the time, no matter how much heart they might have. Which is entirely unquantifiable.
You're right about them playing as a one whole unit, defence first mindset. That's not entirely because of stylistic preference, it's also because they don't have the skill to be truly successful any other way.
