Malkin is in game form, but Crosby looks rusty. Leafs might be OK if they can shut down Malkin-Neal line.

Your decision... Gunnarsson is not a very good player though and the love for him is ridiculous really

Gunnarsson is a perfectly passable second pairing defenseman, who can play okay for stretches on the first pairing if you're unfortunate enough to need him to do so.

He's not great at anything, he's also not bad at anything. He's an efficient positional defenseman. NHL teams are thrilled when a player drafted in the seventh round turns out like him. Get over it.

That's how I see him. He's only been on the 1st pairing by default and certainly wouldn't be in any long term plan to be there.

I thought he's been pretty poor the 1st two games without Phanuef to lean on. I wonder if its any coincidence that Dion looks better?

I think we'll gradually see Kadri get more chances. Remember, Getzlaf and Perry started out on the 4th line under Carlyle...and they had to earn their way to the top line. They went from 4th liners to 3rd...to PP opportunities...to the 2nd line..etc...

Carlyle will handle Kadri's development properly.

I think we might be able to squeak in a win here, although I am realistically saying we are going to lose with Malkin unleased. Dion has shut him down in the past the problem is, if Malkin is covered Crosby can easily just take over the game, hopefully tomorrow he shows the rusty game he's been playing so far.

Today in practice, Kadri spent time with Kessel and Lupul on the PP.

I freakin' love Carlyle. He's a smart coach and I think he realizes Bozak on the PP is not the way to go. I like Bozak as a player and his route to the NHL but he just doesn't have the "it" factor on the PP. Almost as predictable as Kaberle was.
If so this is a beauty.

However we need Gards back soon.

I don't think this line up with work with Mac on Kadri's wing TBH. I rather put Kulie there.

Normal Kulie, I'd say yes.

The Kulie that we've seen in the first two games so far, whose been responsible for a couple goals against I wouldn't. Although abnormal, Macs been better defensively so far. Gotta have someone to help insulate Kadri.

Gotta find a away to let Kulie and Grabo mesh so he can get his game back. Mac and Kadri might be able to find some chemistry... Although he can't generate his own offense, Mac's a decent finisher if you can get the puck to him.

Why is there even:

1) an argument over Reimer or Scrivens starting? Scrivens had 3 GA in 120 minutes of play, that's a goal every 2 periods, plus he's making saves more than 92.5% of the time. If Carlyle yanked him now we'd be going back to the old pointless Ron Wilson goalie carousel, something that shouldn't be done to ANY goalies on any team. Scrivens is playing good, keep him in.

2) an argument over playing Kostka. He's got slow foot speed but there's a reason he's playing 27 minutes. Is he a top pairing d-man? No. But has he been deserving of this icetime so far this year? Yeah, or he wouldn't be getting it. Carlyle's not an idiot, he wouldn't give Kostka 27 minutes and put him on the 1st pairing if he thought he didn't deserve. This guy is an NHL coach, we're commenters on a site, give him some credit and trust he knows what he's doing with Kostka.

Bet the over. I smell a serious ass kicking.

9 goals against 2 tough teams. Were in trouble

I think some of you guys get too caught up with the name on the back of the jersey.

Because Kostka wasn't expected to even make the Leafs and wasn't drafted in te 1st round this year he won't be accepted.

I'll take the hometown guy who has been solid as you can be an making nothing over Komisarek any day of the week who is paid like an all star.

There's no shame in losing to Pittsburgh. That said, the Leafs are showing that they can play a defensive game and when you do that, anything can happen.

I am going to watch without expectations. The Leafs are a much faster team than Pittsburgh and caused them a lot of trouble last year. We'll see how it goes...

Tomorrow Dion Phaneuf will show the haters how it's done by shutting down Malkin's line.

Can't believe the hate he gets around here.

Last year...he shut down the likes of Tavares on an insane point streak, Malkin, and Stamkos. Those were the three biggest stars of the game last year.

I know Komarov is going to hit Crosby tomorrow ;). Can't wait.

I have an awful feeling that we are going to be lit up...Crosby, Neal, Malkin, Letang...**** isn't fair man.

Looks like JVR, Grabo, and Kuly are the early members of Randy's doghouse this season. And deservedly so.

Today's practice lines:

Lupul - Bozak - Kessel
MacA - Kadri - Komarov ---- named as the "2nd PP unit" by coach
JVR - Grabo - Kulemin

I wonder which one of Komi or Franson plays?

Phaneuf - Kostka
Gardiner - Gunnarsson
Liles - Komi/Franson

After last nights game I suggested swapping Macarthur and JVR, and one day later its done.

I think I am going to love Carlyle. This guy isnt afraid to tinkle with lines

Hope the Pens realize the Leafs have not made the playoffs in like 700 years and take them too lightly and get upset. Stranger things have happened.

Yes, those three have underperformed. Give Kadri more play minutes.
