Leafs need to address the goaltending.

We can carry an extra goalie if we send Holmberg down... Maybe just give Samsanov a month of practice only, get him out of the spotlight, and let him work. Think this is mostly mental at this point and he has been trying to work through it, but we also need to start winning more games.

We can carry 3 goalies when Woll is back too.

Not gonna lie, I was expecting to wake up to news Sammy had been put on waivers...pretty surprised it hasn't happened yet

Really? You were expecting this organization to do something to address issues that have plagued them since forever? Sounds like a you problem in all honesty. History suggests that doing nothing is exactly what you should have expected (unfortunately).

Keefe alluded to it last night, mentioned his development and what’s best for him. Do people forget Woll came up when he was 23? This kid is 22, not 20, and he’s playing well enough to get a look. Plus we don’t really have a choice right now, unless we want to waste assets on a stop gap?
Demko played an NHL game at 22 and had .840 SV%. Roy played his first NHL game at 19. Keefe only needs to say let the kid see what it is like in the NHL, so he knows what to work on blah blah blah. No one will put pressure on the kid. It seems the problem is Keefe himself.

When the team is scoring 5 goals night in, night out those are games you should win. All these loses are 100% on Samsonov. He is absolutely terrible.

you can just see it in the body language of Samsonov that he has completely quit on the team. He does not want to be there. This is a guy who is begging to be put on waivers. You can also see clear as day that the team has zero confidence in this guy. It is absolutely terrifying when he plays.

the only team that would be interested in Samsonov

Our GM is asleep. The Samsanov problem should have been addressed weeks ago.

nonsense - the coach has no options
How about our farm team there must be something there that is playing better than sammy they have to try something

The second easiest would be to either waive Samsonov to the farm (he'd clear) or get him to agree to an AHL conditioning stint with the Marlies.

Toronto could then recall a prospect the organization doesn't want to rush: the more experienced Keith Petruzzelli, 24, is 4-3-1 with an .879 save percentage; and the more touted Dennis Hildeby, 22, is 7-5-2 with a .920 save percentage.

Door No. 3 requires looking for outside help.

Jaroslav Halak is a 38-year-old free agent backup who posted a .903 save percentage in the past two seasons with the Canucks and Rangers. He's not up to speed, but he also won't cost an asset.

A few middling NHL goaltenders could be had via trade. Names such as Jake Allen, Eric Comrie, Anton Forsberg and Dan Vladar — whom Treliving traded for and re-signed in Calgary — will pop up.

But with the Devils, Hurricanes and Oilers also poking around the goalie market, even the price for a replacement-level netminder is abnormally high right now.

The dream-scenario option would be Juuse Saros, who has another year on his Nashville contract at a $5-million cap hit, but the Predators are still in the hunt. And Saros would cost more than we believe Treliving is willing to spend. (What? A first-rounder plus Fraser Minten or Easton Cowan?)

Perhaps the best low-risk, low-investment option I heard is Louis Domingue.

The 31-year-old career backup was stellar this season in his one appearance for the New York Rangers, who are set with Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick.

Domingue makes just $775,000 on an expiring deal and has been solid for AHL Hartford (8-2-2, .911).

Of course, the Rangers have Stanley Cup aspirations. They, too, are aware of the importance of goalie depth and won't be in any rush to do a conference rival any favours.

Our options:

1. Get a mediocre backup and hope Woll can play the lions share of games and perform in the playoffs.

2. Get a 1b Goalie and hope either he or Woll can perform in playoffs.

3. Spend assets on a legit #1 Goalie.

So what do we do now? I'm in camp 3 honestly. Mainly because Woll hasn't shown the ability to stay healthy.

Treliving entered the season with an unproven starting goaltender, an injury prone backup, and the worst goalie in the league last year for relief.

Only 34 games played and the worst goalie in the league last year is now the starting goaltender. Because the unproven starting goaltender has been waived to the Marlies. And the injury prone backup goaltender is, you guessed it, injured.

Some guy who's 6'7" and can do the splits wearing a pair of goalie pads is now backup.

Nine years of the Shanaplan later and the entire operation hangs on a wish and a prayer. A "has been" and a "never was" playing the most important position in the sport. Some guy who's never even played an NHL game before is backup.

While the worst goalie in the league last year will be starting.

By no metric was Martin Jones the worst goalie in the league last year. His save percentage certainly wasn’t great, but he posted as many wins as Samsonov did on a dramatically worse defensive team in Seattle.

But please do continue trying to spin our expected goaltending situation into the most overtly negative one possible. Nevermind that no one was talking about it before Samsonov showed up and crapped the bed.

"His .895 save percentage since the 2018-19 season is 34th among the 34 goalies who have logged at least 150 games in that time. And his .887 save percentage last season — 35th among NHL goalies with a minimum 35 games played."

None of that disproves what I just said. He was signed to be our 3rd string goalie. It’s pretty rare you can get a guy who had nearly 30 wins in the NHL last year as goaltending depth.

Sure, if you cut off lots of guys who didn’t play 35 games he’s last. It’s also worth note his teammate Grubauer faired no better in Seattle’s net. It’s almost likely they could not defend.

And finally ignoring all that Jones has looked good here in his games so far

Is goaltending really a big problem for the TML? Maybe for some worried fans but not all of us. Now that Sammy and his issues are away from the team:

- Jones a vetern, proven goalie continues to look steady and calm in nets. Picks up a SO as the team's currently anointed #1.
- The Hilldebeast, the AHL's best goalie at the moment, is waiting in the wings at 22 YO.
- Joe Woll is on the mend, will be back in Feb to continue his strong rookie season getting calder talk at 25 YO. Was looking special.

This is looking very exciting all of a sudden in net.

Yes goaltending is a major issue you are in denial if you believe it isn't.

The reality is the team has one useable goalie.

Samsonov is a "goalie" that can't stop a beach ball, and Woll is out.

They are ONE bad bounce away from an AHL goalie being the #1.
