If Hunwick is out for a substantial amount of time i think the Leafs should target Despres from ANA.
TOR and ANA deal with each other frequently, ANA is tight to the cap and TOR is in need of some bodies on the right side defense. Despres is also 25 and fits right in with the leafs timeline.
Not 100% sure of TOR's cap situation though. (i miss cap geek )

If Hunwick is out for a substantial amount of time, the Leafs improve without having to make any trades!

LOL

I dont think losing one of the few vets TOR has and not replacing him is a great idea, but i guess Polak will get the nod in his place.

If Chevy changes his ask (for trouba) to BPA (b/c lhd is a big need anymore b/c of Josh play or no lhd is available), Leafs have the high end young forward assets to get it done.

Nylander imo would be on the table for Trouba. But if you are taking Nylander you would need to take either Michalek or Laich in addition to Hunwick to make the cap work. There is no reality where the deal is JVR + one of the Holy Trinity. It's either JVR + one of the second tier guys (Kapanen, Brown, Timashov, etc), or it's Nylander plus a heap of short term trash for you guys to take out next July.

I know some Leaf fans are opposed to Nylander in any deal, but top pair RHD who can solidify our top pair for the next six+ years don't come around often.

Yeah, but neither does a player like Nylander. I don't touch this deal with a 10 foot pole. The Holy Trinity are the Holy Trinity for a reason and this is no shot at Trouba either.

I think you'll see TOR management keep the 3 around as long as they can. The last thing Toronto needs is another young player to slip through the cracks ala Seguin, Rask ext ext

I hear you, but Trouba isn't trading for Brian Leetch or Ron Francis in the last seconds of their careers either.

You're not wrong.
I think you'll see more of the same from the TOR management in terms of patience and development, is all.

Thanks Keon!

None of the big 3 would be available if that's what you're getting at.

If your saying no Gardiner, Reilly, Matthews (clearly no), Marner or Nylander.......there's literally nothing left of interest. No jvr is not interesting as a return I'm sure you figure out why without me explaining (not insulting him). Then I see no trade possible involving scraps, minor pieces or picks. I don't think I forgot anyone, correct me if I'm wrong.

Gardiner is really the only piece that makes any sense with Trouba right now, I understand that everything outside of the 3 rookies and Rielly won't be enough. If this situation was happening next season after both Marner/Nylander put up good seasons and we had something promising on the horizon like Brown putting up 50 points, then a Nylander/Trouba swap might have made sense to discuss.

As it stands now though, that kind of deal could bite us in the ass if we move Marner/Nylander and the one we keep doesn't work out for whatever reason. That combined with Trouba's contract demands and apparent reluctance to play in Canada could derail the entire rebuild before it even gets going.

I agree it would be Gardiner as a main piece. Perhaps a decent d prospect as well since he isnt as young as Trouba. On top of that a pick or prospect. It really needs to get done.....it seems to be a pretty big need for us.

Personally I would do that, as you layed it out (depending on the D prospect & pick).

How true. It simply let's a more capable player in either Polar or Corrado to play as the # 6.

As for Despres he's an intriguing option for the Leafs as a guy who could fit in as the # 4 on a reason able salary but can't see the Leafs giving up much if anything cause of concerns of him getting his career back on track or reinjured.

I feel people discount the presence of veteran leaders for TOR, they are a young and inexperienced team. Veterans are invaluable to their situation, in my opinion of course.

Yeah he is signed for quite a long time.

It would be a gamble on the leafs behalf, but if TOR could get him for a straight swap of Marincin I think it would be a good deal to consider. ANA gets some cap savings, some long term relief and a player who could fill in for Despres' departure however is a downgrade. TOR gets a player to slot in on the right side with the potential of rebounding into the player who used to play for PIT.

I have no idea what ANA wants, but I was thinking Corrado+an appropriate pick
Again, no idea though.

I want Montour. RHD.
Leivo & Leipsic for Montour.
Fowler & Stoner for JVR.
