I don’t think he’ll be the GM in three yrs. If he’s given the opportunity to rebuild after this season then I think the window to win will never open. We saw what 5 yrs of mismanagement can do and this guy is worse than Dubas.
Kyle was given time. I'd imagine Brad would get the same opportunity.

Players comfort with team culture, we have one of not trying all that much and not fighting for one another. Any UFA coming in brings in good habits for a couple of games, just to have his soul sucked out in order to play proper Leaf hockey.

None of these guys even seem to care.

They're no better than the average working Joe. Just in it for a paycheque. They have no passion.

Complacency is order of the day.

Going back to the 2020 draft we had a chance to draft Guhle instead we took Amirov.
At that time we needed a top dman in the
system , today we are paying for that decision .
We have never looked after the D

Trading Marleau cap was a dumb move
I said back then that we should have taken a step back yr.
It’s been a poorly managed team for years that stems from the mistake of hiring an apprentice GM.

If he is, it’s over.

They look and sound like they care and are trying. They have too much of the same ingredients.

I miss when a PGT was about the game not whatever garbage the OP wanted to push here.

I saw the game but didn’t really watch it as we had some people over and was interested in some thoughts on it.

Change the title at least so we know what we’re reading.

If he is, it’s over.
It's already over. What exactly is over though? Did it ever get truly started? There can't be many NHL teams that have won fewer playoff rounds than ourselves since Matthews was drafted.

The window to contend for the Cup in the Matthews era will never open.

Praising Dubas for digging the hole is a strange flex.

Oh f*** yeah. We've known that for years though. Half a decade at least. Some dumb f*** thought it would be hilarious to pay half the cap to 4 forwards. 2.5 of which are extremely soft.

I 100% agree the window will never open. That got taken care of a long, long time ago.

What I saw is same old team that is not paying attention to the little thing. Dumb turnovers. Not executing simple plays. Keefe says that the D was completely exhausted in the 3rd. I saw the same thing in Boston, last 10 minutes they were holding on for their dear lives. What is the plan here? They have 4 games this week, if they are exhausted now, What will be of them in a week?

The beginning of the end was when Shanny decided to hand the keys to Dubas. Tre might not be the answer and might turn out to be worse, but Dubas was certainly not the answer. Five years of shuffling the deck chairs around 4 proven playoff losers and bleeding assets for one lousy 2nd round win was more than enough proof for me.

Don’t forget they abandoned the rebuild when they signed Tavares setting the internal market and it killed any chance of building contender. That’s history and can’t be undone.

However, they’ll have loads of cap space after this season and next which gives them an opportunity and if Treliving is GM I have no confidence he’ll build a contending roster.

Winning a round seemed to be like Dubas' cup. The team never gave him a reason to believe and invest in them, yet every year he threw assets out the window to try and act like a "contender" while they were never even close.

I never understood throwing these assets away on rentals when the core dudes have never shown you they have what it takes to win yet. Every year I hated the deadline rentals, would talk about how a deadline add rarely changes much for a team or pushes them over the edge. Let the CORE group show that THEY can win a round or two, then maybe think about adding at the deadline. Until then, youre just pissing away valuable assets for what? This mentality was the same shit with the contracts. Over paying them for success they never even sniffed.

Thanks for using 2 1sts + for 1 round win last year! We are all so grateful and happy.

Losing all those assets makes it tough to build a contender in the four years Matthews has left.

It was honestly such a weird game last night. You’d think with the Matthews hat trick and the Marner 4 pt night that they were dominant, but they were on for 2-3 goals against, including being at fault for the shorthanded goal. Willie extended his point streak on a great pass on the pp, but I’d say it was his worst game of the season by far. Woll made some fantastic saves last night but also let in 5. Keefe complains that his d looked exhausted but only played Lajoie under 5 minutes. There didn’t appear to be any defensive plan at all, the Sabres forwards continually streaked through the middle to either get the zone or get a chance on goal. It was a chaotic mess. Let’s hope it’s just like last year (similar record) where they go on a November run.

Let's face it - this team is just not that good. They let themselves get outworked constantly.

Terrible culture.
Hasn’t this always been the case since this core came together? Can look like world beaters for a few games, then look like the old expansion teams for awhile after that, especially against bottom feeders!
Shanahan is the only guy responsible for the way this team is built. He needs to go!

Since the thread isn’t about the game anyway I’ll pile on another off topic post.

A ‘REALIST’ doesn’t constantly weep for the return of Dubas because his replacement is off to a rough start.
A ‘REALIST’ is wishing that neither of them ever came to town along with their Boss and the anointed Future HOF Coach.

Sorry, but I don’t see that happening. The core has been carrying this team. Isn’t there enough talent there to spread them out so that they would at least have 3 competent lines who would be a constant danger to score, or at least spend some time in the ozone?

Why are you so sure about this? Reminder: they needed a late 3rd period comeback in both of the first two games. It could easily be a 3-6-2 record right now. I don't share your optimism. This team looks bad defensively and both goaltenders now look even worse.
I am so sure about it because on most nights having Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Tavares is going to result in victories against a lot of teams in this league, despite any defensive breakdowns. People can hate on them now, but ultimately players like Bertuzzi and Domi will produce offense. The defense and the third line centre position have to be upgraded, but those are easier positions to upgrade than trying to acquire the talent they already have.

Matthews was great, elite forward who was the only one enjoying the up and down game Buffalo wanted to play.

Marner still has issues offensively even though he had 4 points. He's not his normal sharp self, I think he'll get there. He actually had a shift last night where he blocked a shot and had 3 hits.

Domi and Bertuzzi sucks. They are allergic to the puck and Domi is a terrible defensively.

Knies is the best player on his line every single shift, this can't keep happening. I'm for promoting him to the 2nd line and having Bertuzzi on the 3rd line.

Nylander looked like a can when matched up with Thompson and Tuch. He couldn't match them last night.

Brodie was a disaster in his own zone and Gio looked like he was in quick sand.

This defense is a problem

From where I was sitting Woll was good at times but definitely not his strongest performance. A couple of those goals weren't great and he looked really shaky in the third near the end of the game. Matthews was really good all night. Marner had that terrible giveaway but overall was better. The assist on Matthews second goal looked more like himself. At one point Knies was out there with him and Matthews and we got a glimpse of what might hopefully be a line one day. They seemed to click. Jarnkrok just doesn't seem to add anything to that line at all.

Defence just wasn't there again and until that gets addressed our goalies will be in for a long year. Klingberg is just really, really bad in his own end (when he's there). He was getting booed pretty much all night.

The popcorn was fantastic!

Thanks for the update. Poor result but one of those games where you leave disappointed but entertained. Mush better to see live than on tv.

Treliving owns the free agent signings he made this Summer which are looking very bad, but it's absurd to act like Dubas didn't set the table for where we're at now. Free agency isn't the place to build your team at the best of times, but take a look at the free agency crop of this past Summer and tell me who the Leafs were supposed to acquire that were going to fix the glaring holes we have all over the line-up. This is the inevitable result of years of poor management.
