You're definitely right and I think there's also some typical "galaxy braining" by committee going on.

Like we'll test run Sandin in the eventuality Morgan Rielly leaves, but this kind of utilization of Rielly will also become a wedge that drives him out the door. But if Sandin is up to the task, I guess it's just the way the business works...
I like Rielly and think he is a great player. But we are getting to the point of insanity with a lot of this core. Does signing him at 8.5+ mil a year make sense when we just seem to be spinning our tires.

I have no idea if Sandin can do what Rielly can, but I dunno, change might be necessary, especially if he prices himself out.

Can't help but wonder if management s hesitancy to resign Morgan is to see if Sandin can do a similar job for 4 million less....

I still see that as bad management

Either he succeeds and Morgan (an extremely valuable asset) walks for nothing or Sandin doesn't and we are forced to pay Rielly something we probably can't afford

Because of dubass we missed out on Quenneville, his Florida team is 4-0 to start the season.
Good thing we kept Keefe

But what did we expect from a rookie president gm and coach

I believe Hextall was available at the same time.

Well, we know the Leafs are their own worst enemies. So we'll either see their A game tomorrow so they can dick off next week, or they'll keep finding new and unusual ways to not get it done. This sounds like frustration, and it is. But it's also exactly who Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Nylander and Rielly are and have been since the year they got Babcock fired. Squarely on those 5 guys.
Oh I completely agree. The core here have really not helped the team this year so far (still early). It is frustrating as a fan because you know what they are capable of, but it has been bad so far.

If we decide to go this route, we need to retool and that means moving an 11m player. Unless it's a quick retool, it certainly means losing Matthews in a few years. Unless we move him as well for a Lindros like return.

If they get rid of Rielly, they got rid of the wrong guy. The guy you need to get rid of is Dubas, and his doppelganger Shanahan. Great news for me, the Toronto fanbase, and Timothy Liljegren.

So Sharks dressed 7 rookies. All Keefe had to do was run Burns and Karlson with constant hard forechecks to neutralize them (we saw how they dominated puck movement out of their own zone then set up the offense). Then you're left with an AHL roster to beat. But no.

Nice of Keefe on this, but walk the walk too. Limit their ice time or split them up..

He is in a tough position, he needs his top players to play well but if he benches them and the team continues to struggle, it will be worse.

Personally, I would shelter their mins and hope they deliver

All talk, not accountability.
I actually like that he called them out. I think that might be the first time I have heard him do that.

Obviously taking Richie off the top line is easy, tomorrow it very well could be them being split up if there isn't any improvement.

It is more than fair to use the phrase, Reilly can skate circles around Sandin.
Sandin can recognize his man in a man to man matchup, it's been 8+ years of Rielly blowing coverage and really, he's not much of an offensive defensemen. Just puts up points on a PP.

Sure, blame the management. I dont love Dubas by any means but I dont blame him for "investing" on these players. Maybe its time to look at the selfishness of players like Marner. I know Marner gets his fair bit of hate from Leafs fans, but if you and your daddy are going to demand elite salary then show up. He hasn't.

Don't get me wrong, this is one of the most unlikable groups of players I've ever supported and I dislike them a lot of nights but turning over this roster would be a nightmare

We've tanked the trade value of most of them

Marner's contract has made one of the more talented players in the league almost untradable if you want decent value back

Yea fair enough. I have my opinions, I would like to think that a multi-billion dollar organization has a bit more of a clue then us fans on the internet.

Wouldn't it be wild to run an organization with a bunch of forum poster strawpolls. Maybe we could do better.
Maybe we could, lol.

As someone who's looking more for process right now than racking up points in the regular season, the same issues plaguing the team are there. Things start to go wrong and mentally the team cracks. Things are going to go wrong in a hockey game sometimes and sometimes you'll lose because of it, but the Leafs don't push back. Bunting and Spezza were the only ones trying to generate any energy out there when the team was down. Our cores group looks completely disinterested.

Ritchie also just does not fit the make-up of this team at all, he's gonna be a fifth wheel all season unless there are adjustments soon.

There are some truth to that but what’s the point being a good man on man defender if you can’t catch up.

I love Matthews, and think he might be the best player I have seen in a Leafs uni. It would suck to lose him, but at some point, if he has been here 8 years, and we haven't done anything, is it the worst idea to move on? I personally do not think he is the problem, but if he won't re-sign here, yea I do think you move on from him.

Personally I move on from Marner before then, but I don't know. There is only so many times you can go to the well with the same players, with zero progress and keep hoping it will turn out differently.

Well, maybe when Mitch Marner followed up after the loss to Montreal by saying he wouldn't change anything about his game and preparation and then re-iterated he's not going to change anything the organization should have sat him down and given him some guidelines...

It depends how the story ends.

What do they do at the tdl or in the postseason before we can say it's been the right call one way or the other
