Predictable loss. Load up on grit and this is what happens. The grit fans have a lot of explaining to do.
It's the same every year regardless of the supporting cast. Grit, shit, fancy, small, soft, ambidextrous, young, old, vegan, carnivorous, early risers, late risers, Democrats, Republicans, only child, triplets.

Out at the first hurdle.

Thornton out.

Engvall, Brooks in.
How bout Simmonds out too?

For all this alleged grit he's supposed to bring, he sure made himself invisible lately.

Can we just go all in on our speed and skill identity? Mixing grit in does nothing, every player who comes here eventually blends in and completely abandons their physicality.

On the positive side, I know we can play better, that was probably the best Montreal can play. So there is that.

Next game Saturday night.

Objectively they need to get over this mental hurdle.

The Leafs didn't suck at all. Except at finishing their chances.

Somehow, someway they HAVE to get over this. I have zero doubt that IF they do, they will make an incredible run.

No post excuses( Matthews and Nylander), who both had fantastic games outside of burying their chances.

Even Reilly looked better than he has in weeks. None of it matters if they can't find a way to finish

Well as a neutral fan cheering for the leafs, obviously tough game given what occurred... that being said

Matthews and marner need to be factors, and need to be much bigger factors if jt is out.

defense and Campbell were fine, pk was fine. Sandin looked kinda meh I’d sub him out for hutton in game 2 tbh.

Thornton/Simmonds didn’t do too much, maybe put in younger legs for them. The pp def needs to generate offense or the Canadians won’t fear taking bad penalties.

hyman was the best player for Toronto imo, just toss this game away and come back in game 2 and tie the series up.

Im not sold on Bieksas Price.

What did we really get on the guy? Lots of long range shots. Couple posts. He did make that massive save on the 16 and 88 two on one. But how many two on ones did they blow?

Leafs played rushed and afraid.

Tough to dismiss the effect the 91 injury had, but that wasnt the response they needed.

It wont be a sweep. And there should be lineup changes. But this one has just started.

I swear these guys only had 3 scoring chances. 2 off Thornton and then that one play when Armia had a mini breakaway and shot wide.

Leafs in 5 if we play the right guys at the right time.

Those guys both sucked. At least Joe will make a pass here and there.
Joe is not the problem, it's his usage. that's on the coach

Right - it's the fact that he's being used at all despite being terrible.

Keefe didn't make Thornton completely bumble the puck repeatedly resulting in 2 goals.

I said they should've fired Malhotra after how abysmal the PP was and people were like you don't change a coach during the season.....uh why not how could they have been worse? This is what you end up with now, an anemic PP that looks bad in the playoffs. What are you gonna do now, change the PP coach during a playoff series?

I am not sure how people can come in here and say they are still confident. Have they not watched this team for the last 5 years with this core? This is literally the same story over and over. With the PP being historically bad, I don't see how they go on any run, even if they somehow manage to slay the demons of not being able to win in the FIRST round.

Who cares? We lost JT to a freak play, 2nd year in a row this happens, and regardless of whether we beat the Habs or not we’re not winning 4 series without the captain.

Damn shame.

We got Simmonds for the playoffs apparently and he was the most invisible guy on the ice tonight.

All this while we have Galchenyuk, Brooks, Engvall and Robertson chomping at the bit for a spot on the team.

Was Sandin skating on quick sand because he was anything but quick on that play or is Paul Byron really THAT fast? To me it looked like the former

Not sure what game you watched but Matthews and Marner were very visible to me. Just cuz they didn’t get on the score sheet doesn’t mean they were invisible.

Agree, they were working pretty hard, and Nylander was great the entire game too. I still saw nothing to tell me we win.

Unless the PP can do something positive, we're toast. Moral victories are for losers during the playoffs, so its time to get it done or f*** off.

I mostly agree with you on Simmonds but he was much better than Thornton tonight. While he didn’t impose himself physically, he actually made some smart plays and wasn’t much of a liability. Thornton is a massive liability. His passing is awful and kills many plays.

I thought Mikheyev would have more of presence tonight and I think he has more to give. Thornton flat out sucks.

No he wasn't. It seemed that way because he never faces good competition. Joe actually gets to face their top players, especially on PP
Joe turned over both goals. He has always done that

Simmonds just sucks. Not sucks like a bag game, he just sucks as a player

If he's not hitting what is he really doing

Was held to 2 goals or less during the final 3 games of the 2019 Boston series then followed it up by averaging around 2 goals per game against a less talented CBJ team (which included 3 OT games). I know this is just the 1st game but given the history, it really is concerning how anemic the offence becomes come playoff time.

Not a horrible performance. PP let them down. Bounce back Saturday
